Kill la Kill is a television series directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Key Animator in NGE, Director of Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) and produced by the fairly new studio Trigger (Little Witch Academia). It first aired in October 2013, and it tells the story of Ryuko Matoi, a vagrant schoolgirl, searching for her father’s killer, who, after searching far and wide, has led her to Honnouji Academy, where the strict student council president, Satsuki Kiryuin rules harshly under the regime of her mother’s fashion empire. This is Triggers first attempt at an original television anime project, and so, the plot vastly differs from many anime already out there, making it stand out as (in my opinion, one of the ‘must watch’ anime of 2013-2014.

Now, on with the plot. Overall, I give it an 8/10. I will be honest, there was some point in the middle where I began to think that it was getting sort of dull and dragging on quite a bit, but then, because it picked up the pace, it quickly brought me, and I’m sure a lot of viewers aswell, back on track to enjoy this show. However, I’d rather rate it on the actual hard work of the writer and director, and not just my experience of it. As mentioned above it’s a very unique story, I’ve never ever read or seen anything like it, and so because of that it gets a 10/10. It’s refreshing to see some new work by a relatively new studio every once in a while, that shakes the whole industry up as much as this did, there is no doubt in my mind that it is here to stay, as I’m sure that the hype that built up towards the last episode, will not die down for a while, with that said, I don’t want to see a continuation of the series, as it ended very well, no cliffhanger, but what would be nice would be for some OVA’s to be released, I guess to sort of quell the greed of the fan base, but then again, it might just disappoint, so let’s leave it at that.

As for art; I give it a 7/10, because unlike the plot, there hasn’t been much change in the way characters are designed, or how backgrounds are drawn, and the fight scenes, however exciting they may be for me, are pretty run-of-the-mill. What is new however, is the way the characters ‘power-up’ so to say, the whole series focuses on a mysterious alien life-form called the “Life Fiber”. Honnouji Academy is a school that houses many students, and also many clubs. The members of the clubs receive uniforms, known as “Goku Uniforms” that give them strength and abilities that vary in relation to the percentage of life fibers they contain, these are available in 1 star, 2 star, and 3 star variations, the latter of which is given to only the elite members of the Academy. The way the attacks are animated is very well done though, as many members of the school have different fighting styles, and so the fighting scenes all vary, giving you a ‘unique’ experience every episode.

Now, comes music, there’s honestly not much to say about this, as sadly, it rarely makes an appearance outside of battle, often being drowned out by the adrenaline rush provoked by the conflicts themselves, but I’ll give it a 7/10. It does the job, it’s been very well chosen, and matches the scenes very well, but it isn’t as pronounced as it should be, but it shouldn’t deter you from watching, as it isn’t about the music, but it’s about the experience, which I will talk about later

Last but not least, character development. This is honestly, one of the best qualities of this show, and because of this is will give it a 9/10 (for reasons I will explain later). Kill la Kill follows the story of a teenage young girl, with the typical teenage girl attitude, however, throughout the story Ryuko meets many interesting characters from all walks of life, and so develops very well throughout the story, and trying not to divulge too much, she’s changed a lot through the entirety of the series, as well as her friends Mako and Senketsu (her Goku Uniform). But I don’t give it a 10/10 because the majority of the development concentrates around her and her uniform, which, however much I may enjoy, others may not.

Overall, without taking my opinion into account I give Kill la Kill an 8.7/10. I thoroughly enjoyed the show beyond belief, and was kept at the edge of my chair about 3 times every episode. This was a series I looked forward to watching every Thursday/Friday without fail, and would often stay up at night to catch the release. I cannot hope to express my true feeling for the show through writing, but I only hope that whoever watches it feels the same, and loves the series just as much as I do.

This is my first review, so any criticism (on my review not the series) would be greatly appreciated ^_^
