Spice and Wolf is set in medieval times, with a slight bit of fantasy put into it. It is clear from the get go that this is not an action anime. There are very few scenes that feature fighting, and the fighting in itself is very 'realistic', in the sense that characters are not performing impossible 5 meter jumps, or dashing around at the speed of light.

As such, all of the episodes feature extensive dialogue, which can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you like the most. Most of the time will be spent looking at the two main characters, Lawrence and Holo, and the interactions between one another. They both have very defined and distinct personalities, and their interaction with each other is by far the biggest selling point of the anime. So much that, whenever they are separated for some reason the show starts to drag around somewhat. Thankfully that doesn't happen very often during the 13 episodes.

The plot is created along with the show. What I mean with this is that almost everything story wise, both starts and ends during the period shown in the show. There is very little back story, and even less actions expected to happen in a distant future. The story is how the main characters are living at that moment, with barely anything that happened before influencing it. It is also not very ambitious. It is the sort of events you could easily believe to have happened in the past, with the slight bit of fantasy lore I mentioned in the beginning.

While the art is very good, I don't feel it is good enough to push this anime beyond a 7. The OST has a few great tracks but mostly I found it to be fairly average. As I said, most of the enjoyment of the show comes from seeing the two main characters interact with each other, but the rest of the anime sort of dragged my overall impression of it down.
