I remember that I used to not take this series seriously, until I actually got to watch it. I also was one of the ones who considered Gurren Lagann overly hyped. But boy, how wrong was I.
You will see action each episode and epic ones of course. The story is the strongest point of this anime and the reason is, there is a logical explanation for everything. So I have to strongly disagree that this show "ain't about story but kickin ass". It does still kick ass big time but the story is also very good. The story is well paced and "stuff" start happening since the beginning. The story gets a heavier atmosphere as it progresses.
The art is outstanding. Epic. You will repeat scenes and that PrntScr key on your keyboard will be pressed more times that you have ever pressed it in your life.
The sound is epic but it would have been better if there was more variety. Still its epic.
Character development is the strongest base of this anime. You will see.

Overall, you should watch it. If you don't and die, then your life's been a waste.
