Gurren Lagann features a fantastic story with the overall message of "Believing in yourself" and "Not trying to be someone else, but walking your own path, doing things that only you can do" which gets through loud and clear! It's a great message, and it will stick with you long after watching this series!

The only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a perfect 10 was the ending. Without spoiling anything, I will just say that I thought it was overdone.
