Kyokai no Kanata is an interesting anime, it is very different from the standard model of shows for Kyoto Animation to doo, an action and dark fantasy story, I was very interested in the project when I first saw the teaser and decided to give it a watch.

The anime is…good, despite what the promotional material and the opinion of people who obviously haven’t seen the show will tell you, it balances the humor and the drama really well, when it’s time for moe and goofiness, it does it like the way only Kyoto Animation can, but when it’s time to get serious and fight for your life, the show focuses only on that and nothing more, I like shows that can do that.

It has great characters, you will get to feel and like them all, they have interesting personalities not based on the typical archetypes found in animes and a great supporting cast that makes you love them.

The story is where the anime’s problem lies, it isn’t a very original story, it is your typical good people with power versus monsters and an hybrid plot, although the characters bring a very needed variety to the story which helps separate it from the rest, however at the end of the day, it is a story you’ve probably seen before and done better. However this doesn’t mean the show is not enjoyable to watch, the characters as stated before and the setting while not very original, it draws attention from the viewers so it is a story you’ll probably guess a few plot points here and there, but it is one story you will enjoy, but not one you’ll probably rewatch.

Overall the anime is good, not the worst product Kyoto Animation has put in there, but not the best one either, I’d say watch it if you like these “monster hunting” stories, you’ll have a fun time, just don’t expect an epic masterpiece here.

If Kyoto Animation keeps this and releases more variable animes, I can say they will break the stigma they have of “The Moe Studio”.

Overall Score: 7/10
Recommended? : Only if you like monster hunting and hybrids stories.
