Preliminary (70/103 eps)
If you plan to watch D. Gray man, a small piece of advice first. Do not underestimate it. In the beginning, it might seem to you like a typical shounen. Small arcs, many fights and slow plot progression. But, if you manage to endure that you will be well rewarded with an anime that approaches perfection. The story starts to deepen and gets complicated, but that won't tire you one bit. The more you watch, the more captivating it gets sucking you inside with intesive action, mature plot and incredible character power ups. On the downside, the story finishes somewhat abruptly because of the sudden canceling of the series. Shame though.

The characters are the point where DGM shines. While in your typical shounen almost noone dies, that's not the case here. You will be introduced to several supporting characters and while their background and past will be explained in detail, they will be eventually killed. Right as you begin to feel some sympathy, seeing what they've been through. The emotions the characters, main or not, carry are plenty and make you develop a bond with them. You will feel sadness many times as you will witness the deaths of people you will start to like. Not only that, the cast is what drives the plot onward, not the story itself. And that is both interesting and excellent to see.

The anime is dark, with most battles taking place at night. Even in daylight, you will experience combat under rainfall and black clouds, adding more to the drama. The element of shadows is really strong but there are times where light will illuminate everything. The character models are natural, realistic and very fluent. The landscapes, cities and buildings are detailed as well and usually are bustling with life.

The soundtrack is possibly the weakest part of DGM and the reason it fails to reach perfection. The background music is poor and hardly noticeable, while it has no diversity. It's just the same themes over and over again. The opening and ending themes are fine though. They tend to become more "heavy" as the story progresses, something that matches the plot. Sadly, you will possibly find yourself skipping them many times.

You will enjoy it without much effort. DGM has a perfect mix of comedy, drama, suffering and matureness, all in equal and balanced doses. Even the filler episodes are hardly distinguishable and very fun to watch.

Overall, it's an excellent, mature shounen with a character development that is both unique and fantastic. Definitely worth watching and be certain DGM has its own way to captivate you and keep you hooked until the very end.
