I really think that animes with 11-12-13 episodes don't work out, because, when you are getting closer to the characters, starting knowing them better, truly starting to enjoy the story and the plot... It ends...
*spoilers*
Kyoukai no Kanata is another of this "suit". The development of the characters started very well, knowing their tastes, story, characteristics that made them "special" different and unique. And it just ends. And I hate that.
Let's take Kuriyama Mirai for instinct... She dissapeared, I thought she died, but it doesn't matter, cuz I felt almost nothing watching she vanishing and Akhito crying and screaming... Again it made me feel almost nothing. To show, how bad this is, I think Mitsuki is a stronger character than Mirai, a secondary character was more outstanding than the main character.
Talking about Mitsuki, the anime really wasted some well written background, secondary characters. Shuzuku, Ai, Ayaka, Sakura, etc... One is a badass veteran warrior teacher. We barely saw her in action, or heard about her. Ai and Ayaka are both Youmus that have so much to show and tell, especially Ayaka... And Akihito's mother Yayoi, that woman is unpredictable, and seems to know A LOT about the Youmus, spiritual warriors and events. But we only could take a good look at her, on her ridiculous costumes, and a demo of her abilities of combat, and showing that she's not a complete air-head...
I say again, animes with 12 episodes doesn't work out. Of course, that THERE IS animes with 12-13 episodes that give their show, Acchi Kocchi, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, etc. But Kyoukai no Kanata had SO MUCH potential that went to waste, the characters, the world that is created, the clans/families, the spiritual warriors, the oak shadow, the Kyoukai no Kanata... Everything literally RAMMED in our heads with no right to questions.
Even through, the show really is enjoyable, it have its funny, action moments, and a lot to tell, so if you are looking on a anime to watch. Go-on ahead and watch it, you will not regret.
