"Your life has not yet begun. You are spending overtime inside of your mother’s belly."

How good would it be if it was true! I mean, a belly is warm, a belly is comfortable, and in a belly you don't have to do anything in particular, just live and have fun with your umbilical cord.
It's really a shame we can live in there for only 9 months, before coming out in the real world.

So, what is The Tatami Galaxy, and what did it attempt to do?
It's a show just about an average life, of an average guy, trying to get out of the shell, grasping opportunities, and maybe being happy.
Have you ever felt that something was amiss in your life, that you actually never took any real choices?
This anime is about that feel. And tried in some ways or another, to deal with it.

The story is pretty simple: we're in the shoes of our MC without a name, Watashi for the friends, a college freshman, that thought that entering a club would finally make his real life begin.
We don't need an introduction: every episode loops, showing us a different variation of Watashi's life, basing on his initial club choice, and we're to get acquainted bit by bit to the ambientation and the characters.

The characters - Ozu is a special case - are more like a furniture to the setting, as we're to get to know the cast through the filter that is Watashi. They're great tho, the slice-of-life sequences source of fun, is them. I'd say that the plot is character-driven, but seen the nature of the anime, it's more Watashi-driven: his choice determine who he'll meet, and with whom he'll develop some sort of relationship.

This adaptation is by Madhouse, 'nuff said.
Art-wise, or better, visuals-wise, it's an atipical work, for sure. The character animation is simplicistic, nothing too fancy, but it's in combination with various tecniques, like the coloured filters, or the occasional character and photographed background contrast that made the style really neat.
High-level direction, Madhouse skilled with adaptations, trust them. Even if sometimes things like Chaos;Head get out, they promised to not fail anymore.

TL;DR it is definitively a good ride, the insights and the growth of Watashi are depicted with great realism and the comedy is gold. Watch it for the gum massage if you have this fetish.
