A remarkable series, Fullmetal Alchemist is a tour de force of what a well-written and acted anime can achieve.

The plot, which will draw some fire after the release of Brotherhood, still stands well. Focusing more attention on a smaller group of characters, it slowls down periodically from tense action for self-reflection and doubt on the part of the main characters. Though lacking the suitable climactic buildup of Brotherhood, it drives home a flurry of emotions.

The animation and overall art direction were good for illustrating the series and characters. No particular moments stand out in my mind as either exceptionally enhancing the plot or detracting from it.

The soundtrack was fun to play afterwards for the connections to certain events and feelings it would bring-up. I particularly enjoyed the third and fourth opening themes, which carried the otherwise adequate compositions into "I-have-deliberately-listened-to-this" territory.

The characters are truly outstanding. Each breathes with a believable life and emotion. With a strong main cast and excellent supporting group, everyone is going to find at least two or three characters you end up cheering on and hoping for more moments of screen-time.

Overall the series is a pleasure to watch. Paced slower than Brotherhood, there is still no reason to not dedicate the time to appreciate the quality in the original plot, superb actors, and masterpiece of an anime that this is.
