Nana (Anime) add (All reviews)
Dec 3, 2013
Ai Yazawa's 'Nana' is truly amazing. I originally picked up the manga before devouring the anime, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how the story unfolded on the screen. 'Nana' is heartwarming and lovable, and whether you want to or not you end up rooting for the characters (mainly the Nana's, of course!)
The romance is mature without crossing any lines. It's a nice break from the school-age shows that seems to dominate anime. No flirting ambiguously for episodes upon episodes- there are hookups, and heartbreaks, and honest, passionate loves.

Art (8/10)
Nana has a very distinct art style, with lots of shading and tall, thin characters. They look and feel real. Their movements are natural, and it shows that Ai Yazawa tried to emulate the 'real world' instead of one imagined. My only complaint is that sometimes the characters look a little 'off'- Hachi in particular wears very strange expressions from time to time that pulled me out of my immersion. I don't think she translated from the manga to the anime as well as the other characters did.

Sound (9/10)
Nana has a relatively limited soundtrack, but it's used to the fullest effect. There is one particular snippet that appears before 'big' moments, typically near the end of the episodes, that gives me goosebumps when I hear it. The show is in large part about music, so I'm not surprised it has such a solid soundtrack.

Character (10/10)
Dynamic and constantly evolving, the characters in Nana are as real as they come. No one is ever quite what they seem, and they all have believable strengths and weaknesses. The plot of Nana *is* the characters.

Overall (10/10)
Nana is one of best shows I've watched this year. Once you're hooked, you're hooked! The world needs more josei series like this.
