The Tatami Galaxy is a unique series that pushes the boundaries of conventional anime. It's a coming-of-age story of a young adult that involves time travel, discovering one's self, appreciation of what you have, and more.

Story: 9/10
Tatami Galaxy manages to flesh out a fantastic story in merely 11 episodes. It doesn't feel too short nor does it feel too long. It wraps the story up so that it doesn't leave you feeling awkward. I would have given it a 10/10, had it not been for the fact that, at times, it does seem repetitive. But then again, such is the nature of the story due to the way it employs time travel. I also marathoned it, so that is another reason why.

Art: 10/10
The artistic style is by far the show's strongest point. The show uses a minimalist style that doesn't come off as amateur, weak, or "we're low on budget so just get the damn thing done." It's a breath of fresh air compared to conventional anime. Additionally, it employs real life stills/video and seamlessly incorporates it into the anime. It would seem that the use of monochromatic colors would hurt the show, but it instead adds to its strength by giving flavor to each episode.

Sound: 10/10
Great music and great soundtrack. Although most of the songs are great as in "it's great in a film, but I wouldn't listen to it without the film" there are quite a few tracks that can stand alone. The opening song (and sequence) really captures the essence of the show. It should be noted that the opening song was by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. The ending song was good as well, but it didn't captivate me as much as the opening song did.

Characters: 9/10
This would have been a 10/10 were it not for a few hiccups. There were a couple of characters that were not fleshed out enough, and some of the characters can even be interpreted as a mirrors for the different aspects of the main character's personality, but I think this has to do with the nature of the story itself, as well as an unreliable narrator.

Enjoyment: 10/10
I thoroughly enjoyed Tatami Galaxy, and I plan on re-watching it again so that I can better appreciate it.

Overall: 9/10
The score speaks for itself. One concern I had was the lack of dubs. While I usually watch subs, this is one show that really needs a dub due to the fast pace dialogue. It can be quite difficult to keep up with the conversations and monologues. Honestly, there were times where I had to pause to read the text. The biggest drawback is that because you have to spend an above average amount of focus and energy on reading the subs, you thus fail to give the animation its appropriate attention. Nonetheless, you do eventually adapt to its pace, and it does get easier to watch as you move on.
