First things first, this isn't your regular highschool romance anime. If that's what you're searching for, go somewhere else. There are no happily ever afters here. For those of you not looking for a regular highschool romance, this might be it for you. I'll start my review here.

There are a great many people who dislike this anime. I can't say I'm surprised, given the really dis-likable main character and unorthodox progression of events. These things would probably have caused potential watchers to drop the anime halfway through or hate it for being simply so unexpected. Also, the name and picture given as the representation of the anime is pretty deceiving, so people from the wrong demographic might have gone to watch it and of course, would have hated it. I find this a great pity, because this anime is an anime with a message, and boy does it hammer it into you.

The plot seems pretty lousy, I mean, given the synopsis provided, no one will think it's anything more than a highschool harem romantic comedy, which are commonplace and are useful only for quick laughs. However, remember this, a synopsis is not representative of the story, it is simply how the story starts so you won't get the series spoiled for you. I applaud the plot for two things: It's brave and it gets its message across. Not many anime have gone down the path this one did, because of the high possibility it would not sit well with the potential viewers. And they're right. Just looking at the rating of this anime justifies their fears. This brings me to my second point: It gets its point across, drives it like a stake into your mind. You really can't forget an execution like that of School Days, given the brutality of the show. This is why I say it is better than people make it out to be.

Moving on to the technical aspects of the anime. Though honestly, there isn't much to say. The art was...normal. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't terrific. It reminds me slightly older anime or romance shoujo mangas, with the really oversized eyes. You can hate it, you can like it. The picture given beside the synopsis should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. As for the music...well, it's forgettable. It doesn't stand out, but background music isn't usually supposed to, so that's forgivable.

For plot and character development, the both were a bit rushed after the boulder started rolling. And by that I mean after everything begins to fall apart. In fact, this is what I consider to be the one major failing of the anime: the pacing. Given that it's a 12 episode anime, it didn't really have much time to slowly let things play out, but still, it really could have been done better. This is probably also another reason why people didn't like the anime: It dealt too fast and too hard a blow leaving no time to flinch.

All in all, if you can forgive the pacing and didn't come strolling in expecting a lovey dovey ending where everyone lives happily ever after, and you don't mind brutality to a more-than-average extent, well, you may enjoy this. Of course, there's about fifty other conditions you may need to fulfill to actually enjoy this anime to a huge extent, but a vast majority of anime require at least that many as well, so don't dismiss it without trying.

Happy watching.
