Welcome one and all to another Waldy565 episode 1 review - where I review a series based on just the first epi... Let's get started!
Story - So, to briefly sumarise, a high school kid (there's a recurring theme going on somewhere :P) by the name of Seba-kun has had an unfortunate school career - in elementary and junior, he was always bullied by the bigger kids to buy stuff and generally be a mule. But, what I can only assume is a childhood friend, tells Seba to man up and make some friends. Only, the bullies get to him again and throw him in a shed, which just so happens to be the American football club HQ. Anyway, things happen, and a member sees Seba's potential when he is running away from the bullies, and decides to bring him back to HQ. They cover his face, so only they can keep him when they play games, and in homage to his shirt, he is nicknamed "Eyeshield 21". Pretty basic stuff, but a nice twist on how someone would join a club.
Art - Fairly standard stuff, bit of a cross between hand-drawn and mediocre CGI. It's nice enough, but that's the thing. It's not lovely, gorgeous, spectacular, nor horrendous or terrible, it's just nice.
Not much to say on the sound front either - the title and ending themes are upbeat and funky, but that's about it. Cool enough.
Character is where the show shines. Everyone, even the bullies, has been fleshed out, and it's terrific to see a creator but so much love into a project. When me and my friend start our manga, I'll definitely draw inspiration from these guys and gals and hope I can also give lots of character and charm.
Enjoyment/Verdict - Overall, this is a pretty neat sport anime, that focuses as much on the game as it does on the players and there backgrounds. A great watch, IF a little lengthy (100+!). 8/10
