Given that Ergo Proxy (moreso than SEL) is based on philosophy, it's impossible to ignore it in the show. The "council" personalities of Donov Mayer are named after four of them, for a shallow example. Plato's concept of anamnesis is HEAVILY present- the idea that all knowledge is known to us from a previous incarnation and the process of learning is just RE-discovering that information.
The dualistic principle of body and mind, as evidenced by Vincent, a couple of times. The aforementioned Cogito virus/Cogito Ergo Sum... there's a million and a half more.
Nowhere in your review did you use the word "philosophy" or "philosophical" though. That's just plain wrong.

I'm sorry you're afflicted with those conditions- I don't suppose they lend themselves well to watching thrillers or horror shows/films.

I... I don't understand.

I've read your Ergo Proxy and SEL reviews, and I just don't get it.

Ergo Proxy:

I don't mean to be rude, but did you actually watch this? You noted in the review that you
---"I have a short attention span and so wasn't watching as intently as the show went on"---

It's obvious that you got something out of it that weren't farfetched references to Fallout

---"...infected AutoRiev's, the infection making them malfunction and disobey orders, and having thoughts and becoming more human-like as a result."---

But please... explain to me, if you will, what you actually took away from this show.
Was there nothing about existentialism? Nothing about philosophy? Cogito Virus? Cogito Ergo Sum? "I think, therefore I am"?? Extended metaphors dealing with the complexities of what it means to be human?

(the word you were looking for to describe the art style of EP is "cel-shaded")

Serial Experiments Lain:

Are you admitting that you quit watching the show?

---"There's a lot that viewers will probably have to rewatch to properly understand, I suppose it doesn't help that I switch off at certain points when I get confused"---

SEL isn't supposed to make sense at first. Neither is Ergo Proxy.

Lain isn't so much questioning the ideals of the viewer, but of society as a whole, both within and without the universe... I wrote a review myself on this, but I'll pull part I wrote for the sake of solidarity.

---"SEL could be construed as a warning to society of the dangers of our increasing connectivity and detachment from reality. With how immersive online games, social media, and networking have become, it's easy to construct a persona that may differ strongly from the person away from the net, and in that, create a dissociative, escapist phenomenon that allow us to live multiple, separate, yet very real lives (in the sense that it's present day, present time). At what point do we become the thing that we've created, and cease being what we were before? "---

Serial Experiments Lain and Ergo Proxy are very conceptually intricate and high thinking shows. There's much more to them than what's seen at face value.

Regarding your review of Free, I think what you meant was "From the STUDIO that brought you..." Hiroko Utsumi hasn't directed anything else besides Free.
