FLCL (Anime) add (All reviews)
Dec 3, 2008
While this initially looks like a chaotic cheaper animated short series relying on confusion and hysteria to keep its flow, it is anything but that in truth. It moves quick, it breaks the fourth wall, the soundtrack and animation keep it hyperventilated and frantic. It has many elements that could prevent it from being a substantial series. Somehow amid the craziness, we are actually given a thoughtful piece on youth, growing up and purpose.

I'm not going to go into a full breakdown character by character or episode by episode. If you want something short, amusing, very different and strangely touching, you should check this out.

It's one of my favorite series of all time, it may even top the list. It makes its point and ends, no extras, no sequels/prequels so far, just tells a different story in a different way and stands on its own. This may be the greatest strength of FLCL, it doesn't try to do more or expand more on what it is. This is so refreshing in our sequel-laden, super-special-directors-uncut edition society.

Buy it, rent it, download it, whatever...it's the length of most movies and more satisfying if you give it a chance.
