(I AM WRITING THIS PRESUMING YOU HAVE WATCHED THE FIRST SEASON)
This anime is hard to depict in a few words. For me to summarize it shortly i would say it is a break-down of social hierarchy and social standards. The greatness of having friends or being a loner. Hikigaya in the first season has not resolved whether these two girls surrounding him are pleasant or unfortunate. In this season he has come to the conclusion that these people are great people. The 2nd Season starts off where the first one ended with Hikigaya hated as he does not realize the consequences of his self-sacrifice. I

feel like they take this at the correct speed and do not just rush for him to think that he matters. He does this by realising his flaws and This 2nd Season focuses more on genuine friendships and relations with other than the first. As quoted by Hikigaya "The things handed to you on a silver plate are never genuine, and never everlasting". This explores the sociological idea of relationships are built over time and cannot be gained instantly. Friendships on Commercial Society: Eighteen-Century Social Theory and Modern Sociology by Allan Silver says "commercial society sharply distinguishes self-interested from sympathetic relations and is therefore necessary for the spread of personal relations based on sympathy and sentiment". Ok, ok you might be a bit confused but what this article is trying to say is that social interactions can be categorized into : Sympathetic or Self-interested. What this means is that you are either trying to get something out of the relationship or you are speaking to someone of lower class and you are using 'sympathy' (as used in this article). This is showcased in Oregairu with their depictions of social hierarchy. It can also be interpreted as challenging this view as one of the main themes of this season is Hikigaya's desire for 'something genuine'. You could interpret this as wanting friendship that is not influenced by social hierarchy. You could also say this is achieved by the end of the season. One thing i have not talked about is the introduction of Iroha the new 'potential love interest' but with this anime I saw that this was going nowhere. She adds some diversity to cast and is also a very real character as she might seem cunning and deceiving but she truly is a good girl.
