So...sports anime...what is the essence of sports anime? People working together to achieve a sporting goal. Yeah that's part of it. Getting stronger better faster higher etc. Oh yeah that's in there. Explaining the rules of a sport to the audience. Nope, not at all important, that part is usually boring. What is the most important thing in a sporting anime is...Ganbare!!! Pretty much that. Have that word spoken at least every 5 minutes and you have yourselves a sports anime. Apart from that vital trait, for me personally, the most important part of a sports anime is the feel good aspect. When I watch
...
a sports anime I want to feel good. And boy does Days do that.
There is really no negative aspect in Days, it is all about trying hard, playing hard and working together as a team. There is some training and getting stronger feel to it but nowhere near most in the genre. So if you want to watch a completely feel good anime, lots of bromance moments, lots of different characters interacting and seeing different backstories this is the anime for you.
The focus on the main character, Tsukamoto and how amazing he is and how hard working and how much of an impression he has made on the team can get a little clawing at times. Come on people he is a good guy and all but calm down a little already...BUT if you just sit back and enjoy the feel good vibes (subliminal messaging maybe?) of the anime, you too will eventually be brainwashed uh I mean be a willing convert into the Tsukamoto cult that is Seiseiki soccer (football). Tch, I did not have the willpower to resist the warm and fuzzies of this anime...but it feels so good I am totally cool with it.
The sports aspect comes secondary to the people involved and the obstacles they face. There is a lot of light comedy (which is done quite well) no fan service stuff to get in the way, the merest hint of a couple of romances (there are two girls in the anime and of course Tsukamoto is the focus for both of them, everyone loves the guy you...will...too...just...watch...and...see...resistance...futile).
So this is completely light and fluffy and warm but somehow I was not put off by it, it was not sickly sweet, not to me anyway, nope I just really enjoyed it.
The sporting parts were based in reality, no spinning fireball super shots here, of course the talking while you are in the middle of a game parts are not at all reality based but come on this is a sports anime so having 5 minute conversations/thought process while in the middle of a play is par for the course.
Overall great fun, super easy to watch and one of my favourite sporting anime.
So sit back and get ready to feel good, become...one...of...us...Tsukamoto...awesome...love...him...best...player...ever!

This is a hard one to write about without giving spoilers so expect them later on in the review (don't worry I'll tell you when they are coming). The reason it is so hard not to write spoilers when reviewing Mayoiga is that the main reason I like this anime so much is that it is awesomely weird and if I explain anything of significance about it I will be spoiling the fun of experiencing this weirdness 'cold'. Weirdness is mainly appealing because it shocks you. It isn't as fun when the weirdness is explained away right? So watch it if you like to be
...
surprised by an anime...and now onto the
SPOLIERS...You still don't know if you want to watch it? Well let me try and sell you on it, this anime had an elephant sized silicon boob monster...See I told you this was an awesome anime. Argument over. The end.
Ahem, ok but come on what is not to like about an elephant sized silicon boob monster? Anyway apart from that weirdness the anime has a huge cast of 30 plus characters most of who introduce themselves and list their reason for being there no matter how inane or crazy in the first episode. I watched this episode without knowing anything about it and at first was diligently paying close attention, by the tenth person I was getting a bit lost wondering who had said what and if any of it was vitally important and by the 20th or so I was laughing and letting the whole thing wash over me. I had left my eidetic memory in my other pants that day so yeah keeping track of what everyone had said and their motivations was a little impossible.
The whole anime is filled with tropes and with completely illogical actions by the characters. So yeah it is like pretty much every other anime...but seriously Mayoiga takes it to a whole other level and makes it funny. These characters are super pumped about uncovering a witch then forget about it completely and go to sleep. They lock up people then just leave them there to rot and forget about them. There is a character who calls herself Love-pon who wants to kill anyone and everyone and will scream at the top of her lungs to "execute" anyone who looks at her funny at roughly 5 second intervals whenever she is on screen.
I can understand the confusion that occurs when discussing this anime. The volatile nature of the scores mostly seem to be either very low or very high with few in between. Is this thing a misunderstood masterpiece or a steaming pile? Probably the first thing but not sure...anyway it was extremely entertaining. I can't even say that it was so bad it was good because there is some story here, it is not a complete farce (well mostly it is but there is a story in there which is actually kind of heartfelt and sweet).
So uh in summary this is a Lord of the Flies with coolly weird monster ghost things that has a warm and fuzzy story (eventually) that made me laugh a lot and was quite clever and subtle in places (not the boob monster part) and was completely stupid (still not the boob monster part) in other places. I enjoyed the roller coaster ride.

This one took a while to grow on me. At first it was interesting. Then, about halfway through, I got annoyed at it because the main character was acting in a way that made no sense. Despite this I continued to watch it because it had started out so well and it had gotten its hooks into me enough that I really wanted to know what would happen. Thankfully, as I continued to watch, it all came together and I ended up really enjoying it.
Just a little lesson not to condemn an anime because it takes a little dip mid season. (Although I have
...
pushed through a lot of dips like this in the past only to be completely and utterly disappointed in an anime because it only got worse and worse...sigh). In any case I am very happy I continued to watch as the 'dip' ended up not being a dip at all: all my concerns about Solork's actions were washed away as the story developed.
Nejimaki Seirei Senki is a cut above most in the military battle genre. The characters are strong and intelligent and although the main character, a genius strategist named Solork Ikta, can be a little too perfect on occasion, (making him more saintlike than sympathetic) overall he is still human enough to root for.
The story is set in a separate fantasy universe with access to magic (which is not a major factor in the conflicts), swords, crossbows and basic guns. The story revolves around a group of young military cadets. The fights are quite visceral and generally more focused on soldiers, tactics and strategy than on grandstanding heroes. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys military strategy, likes seeing close friends go through tough times together and watching the evolution of a normal(ish) guy into a 'hero' (quotation marks are provided to prevent the main character Solork getting angry with me...). Keep in mind that the story is screaming for a second season that will almost certainly never eventuate but hey, what is there is good stuff. This is no masterpiece, there are times when the dialogue is a little forced and the plot can sometimes be predictable but overall it has a solid story, good characters and is easy to watch.
SPOILERS - Why did I get annoyed at this anime? Because the main character, a guy who keeps on (and on and on) saying how much he does not want to be in the army, does not want to fight and how being lazy is the best way to live continues to bloody his hands in pointless battles for (apparently) no good reason...but stick with it, the reason reveals itself as the anime continues. It is revealed so subtly that I almost missed it...
SPOILER of my "SPOILERS" section - If you haven't seen the anime yet please don't read this and try watching it first - Solork (the main military genius) speaks to Igsem (the firebrand dual sword wielder) in a quiet moment during the forest fire siege and says the only reason he joined the military was to try and make things a little easier on her. And that was it...no fanfare, no I love you or you are the best friend ever or let's run away together leave your swords behind so we can be super science nerds etc and so forth, just a small comment to explain a hell of a lot of effort on his part. If you blink you will miss this moment (especially if you are reading subs), but it completely made the anime for me, everything he did made sense after that small sentence. Nice.

Hmm perfect 10 huh? Hate reading perfect 10 reviews cause it feels like you are reading some fanatical propaganda or something...unfortunately I can't help it, this thing deserves it.
Ok now if you have no idea what this anime is about just watch it, at least the first ep and then see if you like it. Otherwise SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS:
The reason this thing is a PERFECT 10 (yah it is not perfect but it is easily one of my favourite anime) is that it surprises. Anime is absolutely surprising when you first see one. If you watch a movie from Ukraine (this won't work if
...
you are actually from Ukraine, so to all Ukrainians reading this pretend I said Iceland) that movie will be surprising, the different perspective of the different country makes their popular culture different (duh). But as you continue to consume that popular culture, patterns emerge and woah do patterns emerge with anime...it takes only a couple of minutes (often seconds) into a 1st ep and I know what is going to happen, whose pantsu are gonna be seen by who and which boring nice guy teenager is gonna turn into the best mech pilot/super or magic powered hero and kill all the bad guys, agonizing over his actions all the while etcetera and so forth.
However, this anime goes about things differently. Sure it has tropes: swimsuit episode in a zombie apocalypse (nice shoehorning) and the characters could be taken from just about any slice of life school anime out there BUT it put this slice of life school light comedy right in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. It did not go full dark and moody and depressing either it just keeps on riding the line between these two genres and switching between them at will. This is what makes this anime so original.
There was no point in this anime where I got bored or despaired over the story or character direction, I thoroughly enjoyed all of it and if that doesn't make it a 10 then I do not know what does.
