the story begins all happy and wholesome until the male mcs past is revealed, mcs don't feel the same about the girl mcs which is just to prevent things from getting worse, in skip and loafer, shima doesnt understand how mitsumi feels and makes her upset because people are making fun out of her saying if she was dating her, it'd only be a joke. in ao haru ride, he rejects her because he's too busy thinking about what would happen if he left his girl "friend" who suffered like him. both mcs past has a childhood girl that has secret feelings for them and wants the MC to be with them instead, both male mcs don't understand what they feel about the female mc until something happens both male mcs get jealous when they see another guy with "their" girl female mcs can't forget about the boy they like and thinks being with other boys will make them forget both are heart breaking and really emphasize on feelings and emotions
