note about anime scores: old stuff is yet to get re-rated and may not be representative of my current opinions, so take everything with a grain of salt.
update (2022-02-03): i have re-rated everything, though i do not have a high degree of confidence in stuff i watched a long time ago. for instance, i don't remember much about jojo or k-on, so they're 7/10 purely because of benefit of the doubt. the truth is i enjoyed those works years ago, but i have a feeling that i wouldn't really enjoy them now as i managed to develop a tad more sophisticated taste... or maybe i just have less patience nowadays. whatever.
i have also rated the mangas i'm reading (granted there's enough material to reasonably judge the work) or finished reading, as i think now i have enough of a sample to be able to tell what i like.
i wrote a little description on each possible rating, expanding on the mal ones, to help me quantify the works. these are by no means definitive criteria and are subject to change, but should give a better idea of why i gave each work its score:
10 - masterpiece - extremely enjoyable and impactful. there is no meaningful way the work could be improved.
9 - great - has qualities of a masterpiece, but isn't quite perfect.
8 - very good - i enjoyed it quite a lot. any flaws are small and did not prevent me from enjoying the work, but i wouldn't qualify it as "great".
7 - good - i did enjoy this work, but it may have had non-insignificant flaws that i had to overlook.
6 - fine - i did get some enjoyment from this work, but there are major flaws i am not happy with. or maybe the work just didn't leave any particularly strong impact on me
5 - average - very mediocre. perhaps i did not particularly enjoy it AND/OR had to force myself to finish AND/OR there are major flaws, but not enough to call the work "bad".
4 - bad - there is some merit but the flaws overshadow any positives. the work may have had potential to be good in concept, but failed. alternatively, this might be a work which fails miserably at what its intended to be but manages to be enjoyable in unintended ways, i.e. "so bad it's good".
3 - very bad - somehow managed to be worse than "bad". there may be some merit if you look for it, but there are severe flaws or the work might be arguably considered harmful in what it presents. or just extremely boring to the point i didn't finish it.
2 - horrible - very bad squared.
1 - appalling - no compelling reason exists to watch/read this. trust me
star vs. the forces of evil easily shits on a decent chunk of anime ive watched. its impressive how bland and uninteresting those slice of life series are (though they are not the only bad ones) and how i keep on watching them regardless.
