Advanced: TL;DR Go watch Steins:Gate and don't you ever compare this shit to it (at least the anime, haven't read the novel)
That was.. umm.. not good? Maybe even bad. This review has absolutely no spoilers.
These days I'm not actually watching anime since I became a Light novel reader (Japanese/Korean/Chinese xianxia). And since I want to read a new series and Re:Zero was making some noise (the anime), I decided to watch it first since more often than not, the anime version of a novel source was not as good as the novel source.
So let me be clear here, I was initially got interested since I
...
heard about its gore and death. These two terms imply a serious and a mature atmosphere. And because of that I never thought that this would be a freaking shounen. What the hell was I thinking expecting something along the line of Death Note or maybe Attack on Titan. How wrong I was. As the saying goes for asias like me, "Son, I'm disappoint" (courtesy of 9gag).
I think where this anime fails is its presentation. They were trying to combine gore and serious stuff with shounen themes. And the resulting clash was so bad, I was actually wishing that the time gets faster so that I can finish watching it. There are also soooo many cringe-worthy shounen lines that I shiver when hearing them. Also the anime troupes has high concentration in this show, you name it, they got it.
I'm not gonna talk about the story, but if you want seinen or some mature stuff, don't waste your time watching this. The art was bad, mediocre at best. The sounds try to make things epic but the visuals just could not give that feeling. The main supports have a good background but the main heroine is just a lame I'm-powerful-but-still-a-damsel-in-distress. The MC is somewhat decent but his love at first sight and head over heels attitude is just bad. You might say that some of the things are not shown on screen, but the point here is the anime failed in hinting that. Also, there is harem, though not full on. I'm not saying any more but this show has the worst type of harem guy for me. I'm actually not against harems, in fact I like it very much since everyone will be happy (it wouldn't be a harem if the girls don't like it, since they will leave the harem), Mushoku Tensei has the best harem in which he actually had 3 wives and everyone are happy and I like it very much.
Anyways, I'm 27 and that may hint the anime types I like. Teens might dig this stuff but I'm done with shounen shows trying to look serious.
TL;DR Go watch Steins:Gate and don't you ever compare this shit to it (at least the anime, haven't read the novel)

Pack your bags son, were riding the feels train. CHOO CHOO!
Before watching After Story, the only anime aside the Clannad series that made me cry was Toradora (the part when Taiga realized she wants Takasu). Well, Angel Beats made me sob a little, but mainly Toradora was the best in the heart-crunching, tear-and-snot-inducing, i-dont-care-if-you're-a-manly-guy-you-WILL-cry category.
Well that was BEFORE watching this anime. Anime's like these generally have high ratings when it makes you emotionally attached to its characters. And it succeeded exceptionally in this regard. After Story IS the anime.
The story is very good (well except at the very end, the notch went down
...
a little bit but it was expected since the beginning).
The characters are developed phenomenally and the pacing is really good.
And since I assume everyone here already watched Clannad, by this time the art would have already grown on you.
If you haven't watched Clannad, then stop. Watch it first, you won't regret it.
Overall, all anime lovers, even those who don't like dramas, this anime is a MUST WATCH.

It's my birthday so I'm trying to write something here. I just wished I chose some other anime now. I'll try to finish this show just because I don't want to leave things unfinished.
First of all, I haven't finished the show yet. I'm just on episode 7, and things are not getting good for me.
The first thing that hit me at the start is this anime is beautiful. The initial premise look interesting about the first half of the first episode.
Also I get people who says this "borrows" heavily to other animes. They sort of just mashed characters from other animes. Power of king?
...
Girl in wheelchair? Ace girl piloting a mecha? Mysterious girl? Steiner? Orange (yes, also with the eye thing)? Small you against some giant organization(also, you are supposed to be some terrorist)? I understand animes borrowing from others, but really? What they didn't copy from C.G. is the amazing script writing.
There are just no clear cut-out goals for the main character. It feels very forced, in a very very bad way.
----Some Spoilers, Just bits and pieces, nothing big-----
Here are some questions you will find asking yourself after you watched few episodes:
>Why in hell Shu go meet Gai in the first place? Is it because of the girl?
>Why would someone try to save a girl(a pretty one at that) he just met? Is it because she is pretty? Is it her dress? Why the hell would Inori wear something like that in the battleground(yes, I hear ya', it's fan service. No other reason)?
>What the hell is that? How can Shu move like that being a regular kid(maybe there is some reveal later in the series)?
>WHY IN HELL WOULD YOU PUT A FUCKING PEN IN A SWITCH TO A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION? It was like "here is the simple fucking switch that can blow you to pieces, let's make it so that you can easily click it. Oh wait. I got an idea, why not put a FUCKING PEN in that thing? It would be nice wouldn't it? Oh what an ingenious thing to do!". Damnit,so freaking stupid. And don't start me with "it was given to Shu to deceive him". You can't create something so fast, the freaking pen was there from the beginning. Even if it was created instantaneously, that device was introduced as a tagging device, so why would you put a pen in it?
>How in hell would Gai know what the pen does?
>Where is the depth in the attachment of Shu to Inori? Oh wait, you mean that's just how deep it is?
>Where did the sane reasons went for Shu? Where were the good script and plot writers?
>Why did I watch this series against all reviews not to?
Sorry, I just recently re-watched C.G. so bad things like these seems to show to me like a sore thumb. There's not much character introduction and build up here, the plot and reasons seem to be scattered all over the place(more like reasons are just not there).
Maybe, just maybe, this is like Steins Gate where thing will get real and reasoning will come out after the first half of the series. And maybe, just like MN, the show will get better even the main character sucks so much (though yuki in MN didn't go too far).
I watched only up to episode 7.
