Seeing there are only biased reviews, I thought I'd actually write about what the anime is like, and not just "Omg, so dark, and it's so good because of it!". It'll be my first review, so please be forgiving.
Story - 7
The story has been pretty predictable from the start, but was still enjoyable until a certain twist at the middle of the series. After that incident, everything went just how one would predict it, so there is no actual suspense or thrill. Every characters get his little arc which always ends with happy end. I must admit, the plot is unique, but the implementation could
...
be much better, it had the potential.
Art - 8
Aside from the stiff character designs, the art is pretty good. The background characters don't really move and there are some still images every episode, but overall the art does help us empathizing with the era of the anime. Far from the best work from Madhouse, but the art is still one of the best points of the show.
Sound - 7
There isn't much background musics, so they are overused, and the sound effects are just what you would expect from any other anime. The seiyuus are overall doing a good job, but there are some newbies (like the main character's), whose voices are too stiff and can't really speak with feelings.
Character - 6
There are bad guys and good guys. Bad guys are always ugly, so if you see an ugly guy in the anime, he is bad for sure. Good guys are always good, they don't have any flaws, they always love their buddies over everything else. That's about it. The main characters can be categorized into stereotypes, and there is hardly anything unique about them.
Enjoyment/Overall - 7
Don't be fooled by the unique premise, this is no more than a mediocre show with below par characters and predictable story. As to who I would recommend it to; propably the people who have had enough of the "moe" and "fanservice" shows, and want something "dark", no matter how the anime actually is. I won't say that it's the worst show of the year, but propably the biggest disappointment. For me, at least.
