While I only just began monster, I already see similarities between it and kaiji. They're both psychological thriller anime, and portray real human emotion, which is a rarity. The protagonists show empathy and selflessness, which differs from the "heartless" protagonists in new gens today. People may be drawn away because of the characters not being the "attractive" characters we have in newer anime, but there is much more to a character than that which is shown in these anime's.

- Both main characters have love for a sport, and keep practicing even through the challenges they face. - While the main character from Haikyuu is at a disadvantage because of his height, the main character from Ao Ashi is at a disadvantage because of his povertish backround. - They both are animated by the same studio (Production I.G.). - They have similar "rivals", who have exactly what they want. The main character from Haikyuu's rivals have height, which he lacks. The main character from Ao Ashi's rivals have money to afford new cleats and travel for soccer, which he struggles to do. - Both very entertaining sport animes! Haikyuu = Volleyball Ao Ashi = Soccer
