The most relatable and fucking real anime out there. There is magic in it’s s lack of anything magical. There is beauty in it’s pain. This show helped me come to terms with certain aspects of myself, and the realization that it’s okay to be fucked up and sad and that the world owes you nothing. I love the animation though it may be simple, and the sound design and music are absolutely great. I especially love the first ending theme. A unique and honest depiction of humanity and the unshakable grasp that fear and hatred have on it. Humanity will do what it must to preserve its culture and society, morally grey (or flat out destructive) as it may be. We see in this anime strong themes of class division, racism, war, death, and isolation. Dark, poignant, and heart wrenching at times. I love this look at post apocalyptic earth. Leaving behind the usual trope of technological devastation, the story follows a more philosophical and naturalistic movement. An intimate portrayal of humanities relationship with nature and technology and it’s inability to fully understand or respect either. Seen through the innocent eyes of two young girls wandering a post apocalyptic landscape with little knowledge of what they’re witnessing. Quiet, heartfelt, and at times emotional. Considering the themes of war and hatred, it’s not as dark as you may assume. The aesthetic is tightly wound, and although the scenery can be grey and repetitive it never feels dull or lazy, rather it feels lived in and honest.
