Absolutely without question one of the most underrated and interesting anime I've had the pleasure of watching. After watching the first 2 episodes of Dr. Stone, I was left disappointed that the very interesting premise of "the planet is in ruin, and humanity needs to be rebuilt" was thrown in the dirt and stomped to death by a main character who already knows exactly what he has to do to complete the goal, especially after the addition of an OBVIOUSLY CONTRIVED enemy, being some caveman ape student who inexplicably hates progression. But then I stumbled across Ascendance of a Bookworm, which did everything I wish
...
Dr. Stone could have. Ascendance of a Bookworm follows the main character, Myne, who died tragically by being smothered in a pile of books. She awakens as a frail child in a fantasy historical medieval setting, in an impoverished family, in a rural village, in a rustic world, where books are something exclusive to the richest and most intelligent nobles.
Myne's greatest challenge is the world around her. I hate most isekai, but this is the textbook definition of how to make another world interesting. Myne has to try and use her studies that she has naturally gained through being a bookworm to try and get her hands on a book. Simple goal, very complicated solution. Myne, being in a new world, has to learn more about the world around her without having things like a textbook or an encyclopedia, and can only go as far as her young self is allowed. What ensues is some of the most enjoyable but engaging development as Myne needs to use trial and error to be able to make simple gadgets we take for granted, like soap or a hair clip. To the viewer, this all seems trivial, but easily the best part of the story comes from how the rest of the characters react, because there's no reason this 4 year old child should know all of these things that are foreign to this world. It becomes a back and forth of being questioned but also not causing harm, while actively helping everyone around her.
Without going on for too much longer, I think if you want a unique story unlike any other anime, please give this a shot. With a third season on the horizon, now is the best time to get through the first two seasons.

Currently reviewing this at episode 8/11, and I can't seem to grasp where any of the hype or quality came from. From everything I've gathered from watching 70% of this anime, it's style over substance. Sure, the animation is great, and I think the landscapes and scenery is fantastic, but outside of that, the show is pretty uninteresting. After watching this far, there have been no moments able to grab my interest, and I've only decided to keep watching out of obligation to some friends to give it a fair shot. Rudeus is a pervy little kid, without much interesting behind that. The only good
...
moment I saw from him was his conversation with his father after he hit another kid, and that moment was really well written. It's just a shame that the rest of his time on screen is spent thirsting over children (don't forget, its an isekai, and Rudeus is an adult in a child's body.) The supporting characters aren't very interesting either. Sylphiette existed to have a frail cutesy character for Rudeus to harass, so far Roxy is only there to give Rudeus something to come back home to, and Eris is the most enjoyable of them all, because she beat up Rudeus. I genuinely can't see where these insane reviews are coming from, except for the cardboard personality of the isekai community, or people who just like the animation and think everything else in a show doesn't matter. Once I finish, I might revise this review.
EDIT: After watching up to episode 9, I can conclude that nothing of value happened in this show. The only suspense or setup this show did for the future of the story was set up the green haired evil person, but that had no payoff anyways. The only good bit of writing still is Rudeus's conversation with his dad, and I think Roxy's attempted backstory with the village and everything is pretty uninteresting, due to how detached it is from everything that just happened before it.
TLDR; I think its just another uninteresting overhyped ecchi isekai that had some pretty animation

Short one-shot I found because it was drawn by an artist I really enjoy, that tells a story of the remnants and memories after a tragic natural disaster destroyed the landscape, and how people will find ways to talk even when everything around is destroyed.. Great artwork showing how abandoned everything is, but still gives a glow of life to the stationary shop and a really wholesome ending, highly recommended if you have a few minutes to spare and want a neat story, and I recommend other works by the same artist as well. (yes, most of this stuff seems like i'm saying nothing, and

its because I just need to reach MAL's word count just to say the one shot is well written and illustrated)

Phantom Seer is a series that comes back into my mind every so often as I browse shonen jump, and I just get reminded how it should have never been cut off the way it was. Sales were great, story was very promising, but for some reason or another, the series had to get the axe. After hearing it got cancelled, I just felt like something perfect was taken away. The art in this series in absolutely incredible, with some super creepy monster designs and really good character and world building. It's only 30 chapters, so a short read but I would still recommend it

to anyone, so you can experience what could've been. I plan to keep watch for the pair of author's future works, hoping they can capture the same enjoyment I got out of this series.

I have a lot to say about this show, and I choose to leave it without a rating on my anime list for a reason. Kimetsu no Yaiba is the definition of "Yeah, you can cheat off of my homework, but change it so it doesn't look like you cheated", says 20 years of shounen original greats, as Koyoharu Gotouge walks over to the Xerox copy machine, dead set on having no original ideas. As scathing of a claim as this may seem, I once had this show at a 7/10, with which some personal friends of mine started to attack me for having it
...
so low, and liking other shows more than it, and that is what made me realize what I hate about this series so much.
Demon Slayer is purely style over substance.
There is very little to be had here that can't be found in any other series. Goody-two-shoes main character, annoying side characters that hinge off of a single personality trait, and writing that can only be described as finishing your homework before you walk into class. The references to school are intentional, as following and talking about this show with others is just as senile as a college lecture.
Upon my first watch of Demon Slayer, I really enjoyed the series. I didn't have many issues, it was up there as one of my favorites. That held true until I thought about it for a little bit, and realized that studio ufotable was the nicest thing to happen to this anime. If this adaptation was done by anyone else, I firmly believe the series would not be nearly as well received. After asking some of my friends, the only things I would hear is rose tinted glowing reviews, most of which stemmed from how cool the animation was, and nothing about the meat on the bone of why its really so good. I decided to start reading the manga after where the anime left off, just to quickly lose interest because I didn't have flashy colors to mask how boring everything else was.
Many other genuinely critical reviews say similar things, so my comments don't add much to the conversation, but no matter how many sprinkles you put on a dirt cake, its still dirt, and the same goes for a shallow mold of every shounen that came before it. After thinking about demon slayer, all I feel is a desire to watch a series with an original idea.

I tried hard to like this anime, and juse hope the concerning fanservice of underage characters wouldnt last past the first episode or two, but unfortunately I was mistaken. After halfway through episode 4, I just got uncomfortable and stopped watching, since I knew it wouldn't stop. A real shame too, since I think a fantasy assassin plot could've done a really good job, especially with the skills introduced in episode 2. Just a shame it follows every other isekai and devolves to what can only be described as softcore CP.
Story is decently interesting, I would've finished it had it not been for my main

complaint. Animation is quite solid as well, with smooth fights from what I saw. Outside of that, don't watch this anime if you don't want to be put on a list somewhere.

Coming hot of the heels of reading all of Haikyu!, and wanting to find another sports series that really captured my attention, blue lock absolutely locked me in place, where i binged about 90 chapters in a single sitting. This series really does redefine how sports series can be written in every aspect. If you are on the fence about sports manga and didn't enjoy previous ones, I recommend you give this a go, because it does everything that a typical sports anime doesn't.
Story-9
The plot of Blue Lock is that japan's best strikers are put through a rigorous "battle royale"-esque training camp to find
...
the absolute best players japan has to offer. It then launches everyone into their activities, filled with deception, betrayal, and raw action. My favorite aspect of the Blue Lock program was how teammates could attach with eachother throughout a match, understand each other fully and work well together, just to be ripped apart and pitted against each other, where one's victory means the other gets kicked out, erasing their dreams. The emotional gut punches of some of the panels are second to none, leading me into the art.
Art-10
The art in this series is absolutely spectacular. Just looking at the pages, you can feel the adrenaline and energy flowing through every player, knowing they play like its the last match of their life. Meguru Bachira easily has my favorite panels, with his insane visualization of his monster, exploding out of him as he scores an insane goal. Not much else to say for anyone else, everyone gets the same treatment and its a joy to look at.
Character-9
Aside from the main couple of strikers that stay throughout the program, not many characters get development, but the ones that do are really engaging as you see them grow and learn what it means to be an egoist. Outside of that, its pretty average character motivation and backstory.
Overall/Enjoyment-10
It was a blast to sit down and read this manga, every page turn was with baited breath waiting to see what new move someone would pull off, or what twist would await, turning the entire match on its head. Its a series that's hard to put down once you get to the meat of it, and I eagerly await the anime

This review DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS for the anime, and this review is based off of only an anime-watcher perspective
Figuring out where to start when talking about this show is tough. Land of the Lustrous showed up on my radar thanks to a friend's profile picture catching my interest, leading me to take a look into the show. The CG was offputting at first, but I was willing to give it a go, which was easily one of the best decisions I've ever made. The story starts off very slow, introducing each of the colorful members of the cast you'll unfortunately not learn that much about,
...
aside from a few key characters such as Diamond or Bort or Cinnabar. However, this is an issue mostly remedied by reading the manga, as I believe 12 episodes was the show's biggest hinderance. Phosphophyllite is easily one of the best written characters I've had the pleasure of watching. The idea of "is something really the same as it was before if you replace every part" shines through in this show, and it resulted in such a well written character. Watching the last episodes as Phos tries to come to terms with Kongou-sensei potentially hiding a more sinister secret, or how everyone else is trying to cope with this same idea and hiding it behind a veil of acceptance is a strong way to end off the season, if only it kept going. One of the roughest parts of this production is the 12 episode limit, as I stated before. It results in a lot of the side characters not getting the same development they would, and most tragic of all, Antarcticite not having enough time to be developed for their death to be nearly as impactful as it should've been, considering how Phos changes afterwards. To try and close off this review without rambling more, I'll give my thoughts on each section relative to the anime.
Story-8/10
I wanted to put the story higher but after reading the manga, the adapted story in the anime really doesn't compare to how insane the manga's story is. Another issue I have is that the anime ended off at a very odd point, not staying fully true to what happens in the manga, but its a minor complaint as there wasn't a very good ending spot if they took it one for one.
Art-10/10
Easily the best part of the anime adaptation, Studio Orange blew this out of the park. If for some reason you are reading this far and still haven't watched it yet because of the CGI, I strongly recommend just powering through 2 or 3 episodes, it will grow on you eventually. Not much to add to the conversation outside of what has already been said, its just stellar.
Sound-10/10
Something the manga could never compare to is the OST, which is also very well done. The tracks all fit their situations perfectly, and deepen each scene. Standouts are the opening theme which does a good job matching Phos in the anime, but sure doesn't fit if you look at the manga, as well as the haunting theme of the Lunarians, which has a calm but terrifying feeling when you hear it.
Character-8/10
Phos is the sole focus of the anime, and everyone else gets put to the side due to time constraints. Phos has excellent character writing, and only gets better as the show goes on, but unfortunately anime-onlys dont get the same depth for some of the side characters.
Overall-10/10
This show means a lot to me personally, its the first thing I say to anyone who asks for a recommendation without a second thought, no matter what the person's tastes are as I feel this show is easily enjoyable by anyone. There are flaws with the anime's adaptation, but I couldn't have asked for a better production considering how much wider it made the reach of the series to a new audience. If you get into the series through the anime, I strongly recommend continuing the manga in the chance that a season 2 never happens, or takes a painfully long time to come out. Also feel free to check out my review on the manga, which touches on things a bit differently
