(! 🕱 minor spoilers ahead 🕱 !)
ONE’s first work to gain notoriety was One-Punch Man. It was very popular at release and is still one of the most famous anime of all time, ranked #5 in popularity on MyAnimeList. Needless to say, it was very good. His second work, Mob Psycho 100, is what I’ll be reviewing today.
Mob Psycho 100 currently has two seasons (12 and 13 episodes each) with a third season coming soon. I watched both seasons in one weekend because I loved it so much. The plot is captivating and makes you want to know more, and pretty soon you’ve watched
...
8 episodes.
Here’s a simple synopsis: Starting speedily, sorcerer Shigeo starts skillfully shooting spells… no. Shigeo Kageyama, an eighth grader in Seasoning City, has magical powers that allow him to exorcise demons. He is incredibly powerful and is able to defeat almost anything. He works for the Spirits & Such Consultation Office, under Reigen Arataka, a con man who pretends to be a psychic.
The plot is not incredibly unique. Lots of anime are about characters with very strong powers, but Mob Psycho 100 puts it’s own spin on that cliché. Instead of simply having a superpowered master and an apprentice with lots of potential, you have the powerless yet knowledgeable master and the superior-in-power-yet-lower-in-hierarchy apprentice. This, combined with the multiple-episode arcs mixed with single-episode stories, makes a very interesting plot that doesn’t get old or very repetitive. Also, I’d like to note: this show features some comedy. I thought that it was very good, and it added to the show without being overused or annoying. This was impressive considering that Mob Psycho 100 is an action anime and sometimes the humor can get in the way. (*cough, cough* Demon Slayer *cough, cough*)
The characters are all very unique. None of the characters really follow any common tropes in anime, which makes the show especially refreshing. All of the characters are likeable, and none of them feel unnecessary while still having a massive cast of people that all have their own role and personality. Characters like Onigawara and the middle school gangs were personally my favorite characters, but I also really liked the Body Improvement Club.
The art is fantastic. Studio Bones is known for their high-quality animation, and this knocked it out of the park. The colorful battle scenes when Mob reaches 100% are beautiful, and it generally just looks really good. I really like how they interpreted ONE’s drawings and animated it. ONE’s art has always looked kind of crude to me, so it was impressive that Bones kept the style intact while still making the animation look nice. To be honest, the art was one of my favorite parts of the show.
Another thing I’d like to mention is the differences between the two seasons. Season 1 was very good, and I enjoyed it lots! However, I think that the second season was a little bit more interesting because it goes more into the psychological part of Mob having these powers and how he uses them, etc.
Finally, sound. The openings and endings for both seasons are very good. My personal favorite and probably the best one out of all of them is “99.9” (the second opening) which has a permanent place on any of my anime-opening playlists. The soundtrack during the fight scenes was also very good, and usually fit pretty well. I don’t think that any of the soundtrack besides the OPs and EDs were all that memorable though.
Overall, Mob Psycho 100 is a very good anime. It’s not 100% perfect, but it is very close. I absolutely recommend this to everyone, especially if you enjoyed One-Punch Man or other comedy-battle shonen.
