Mixed Feelings
I sort of decided on this anime on a whim. I generally prefer slice of life comedies, so this seemed about right. The first half of the series is rather bland, but I didn't hate it. It was seemingly intentionally goofy, and I don't mind that sort of thing. All of a sudden though, things shifted in a very different direction, and I'll be honest, I don't think it was for the better. At least not entirely. Yes, the last episode is pretty bittersweet, and I admit, it made me feel something, but the overall tonal shift I can't say I enjoyed very much.

Still, I ...

Preliminary (9/12 eps)
This anime happened to land on my list because I like a good sex comedy anime every once in awhile like a palate cleanser. They don't have to be too deep or involved. One thing I would like them to have though is a story. Any story. This anime doesn't have a story. It's not even like each episode has its own little story. It just doesn't really have one. What it does have is a series of vignettes where a school student runs into his teacher in compromising positions over and over and over again. Each "episode" (they're like 10-12 minutes long, by the ...

Having decided to watch this almost completely at random after the very disappointing, and quite frankly awful "Why the Hell Are You Here, Teacher?!" I feel like I found in this one so far what I was looking for in that one. While I'm only 3 episodes in, I must say, I really enjoy the humor between the two girls who viciously trade barbs with each other doing a Boke and Tsukkomi routine, Sena, the voluptious popular blonde girl who is looking for some meaningful friendships rather than a throng of devotees and Yozo, the taciturn and introverted girl, who isn't all she seems on ...

Haikyuu!! (Anime) add
Really an excellent experience all around. One thing about this show has been that episodes seem to fly by as I watch. It almost never drags at any time because the pacing is so well done. I'm not a big volleyball fan or anything (we used to play in elementary school with a giant beach ball. That was fun) but I really got into the journey that Hinata is on. It's a very "Rudy"-like story. I realize not many of you might get that reference, so let me explain. In 1993, a movie was made about a college kid named Daniel Ruttiger, who went by ...

As I've gone along with this show, I started off merely just enjoying it as an old school anime with some pretty good art and a mildly interesting story. As it's gone on, I've become more invested in the story and really enjoying the overarching quest of Shiro to prove that he is a better gourmet than his father, the arrogant and ill-tempered Kaibara. Perhaps one of the earliest examples of anime that paved the way for culinary focused shows like Food Wars. My only complaint really is that there are only about 40 episodes that have English subtitles and no English dub whatsoever, so ...

A very condensed version of the Dickens novel. It's occasionally re-run here in the U.S. along with all those old Rankin-Bass specials with the stop motion animation at around 1 in the morning long after they've replayed Elf or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation for the 200th time. They don't run it every year, but definitely every couple of years. In fact, I thought it was just another Rankin-Bass animated cartoon, I didn't realize it was Japanese. It's a very average version of the story (Although the portion with Jacob Marley and the other ghosts is actually quite terrifying and that portion is sometimes cut from ...

I really loved the first four seasons of Food Wars. I came to know and like the characters, even the ones that maybe got the shaft in the development department as time went on, but even still. I think the fourth season would've ended things the right way and season five does much to undo it. Sure, the basics are all still there, but it just feels like the fifth season was empty calories, to use a food analogy. Everything feels just so stretched out and aimless. I can't really point to anything specific other than a general feeling as I watched it that, "this ...

I wouldn't call this anime a great story. It is a love story and it's sweet enough that a person might get diabetes from it, but it's not bad, not great. The art is where this one really shines. In particular I don't think I've ever seen an anime that had more beautiful backgrounds than this one and the characters are all appealingly designed, even Takeo, who is purposefully made into what TVTropes calls a "gonk" is well drawn. The English dub (the version I'm watching), is excellent. Andrew Love in particular perfectly captures the large ham/boisterous bruiser voice that Takeo and all professional wrestlers ...

Food Wars interested me early and although it's by no means perfect, I did have a lot of fun watching the show. The greatest strength is the art, primarily the art surrounding the food. Character design is decent, but the beautiful depictions of various haute (and not) cuisine is what really makes it stand out for me. The food battles are sufficiently exciting and surprisingly tense sometimes. The only real fault with this anime is that, while the characters are all pretty likable, especially in this first season, sometimes several of them disappear for several episodes at a time and we don't learn a lot ...

Well, it sure starts off very dark. It begins with a rape scene before we even learn the characters' names. I was expecting this one to be heavy. I was actually fairly wrong. While it has at least one really dark sequence per episode, overall, this is like any number of visual novels floating around out there. A demon tries to use a young man as the host for the devil while three goddesses try to prevent it by having sex with him (Well, two goddesses do. The third doesn't really since she doesn't actually like him that much). That's the story. It's fairly simple, ...
