This is what I wanted K-On! to be, best music anime I've seen yet. The biggest difference to versions of "girl band anime" I've seen before is that the characters all feel like real people instead of various paper-thin cute archetypes. What's also not paper-thin here is the animation, the new 3D CGI animation style allows instruments to look like they're being played accurately for the first time, if you're a musician you will appreciate that you can analyze the mo-cap performances similar to real shows. Finally, if you're a fan of J-Rock the original songs are genuinely great, and the concept to form a ... real-life band to write and perform the songs, in addition to voicing their respective characters, adds a dimension of authenticity and "realness" to the whole production.

This was pitched to me as a romantic comedy about space lesbians. Unfortunately there is not much in the way of romance, comedy, or queerness, leaving only the "space" bit which is pretty uncompelling on it's own.

From reading other reviews of this show on here, I discovered Utena, which on one hand made watching Mercury worth it just to discover this gem. On the other hand, I now understand what a blatant and uncreative ripoff of Utena this show is, but executed so much worse.

Ultimately, Witch from Mercury tries to split the difference between being a Gundam show and literally Utena, and ends up ... doing both poorly.

If your satire fails you just made the thing.

This is the result for Eminence, which i'm told was intended to be satirical but ended up just being a straightforward collection of all the worst tropes in isekai, without any attempt at commentary or subversion. Overpowered protagonist, pointless sexless harem, not a single character with any kind of depth or motivation, in fact the show seems to hold in contempt the idea that someone could act out of some kind of genuine conviction. With so many formulaic isekais like this one, I would expect a "parody" to turn some of these dynamics on their head, for ... example focusing the story on the characters living in the isekai world, who have to deal with this strange loser who is always talking about how he's from another world but is just getting in everyone's way and is just a mild annoyance played for comic relief. This would be an example of funcitonal satire, as it would be re-examining the genre from a new lens and poking fun at the absurd elements.

In a sense Eminence is an impressive achievement, because in a packed arena with so many shows competing to be the worst isekai, this smashes through even this bar to being the single worst piece of media I have ever watched
