I'm one of those dorks who got into anime thanks to Toonami. Sailor Moon was my first, recommended to me by a friend. I jumped right in and from the first episode I saw I was hooked. It was a pretty good one to start with because it familiarized me with many anime tropes. Dragon Ball Z was the next one I checked out and I also got way way into it. From there I dived into whatever else Toonami and Adult Swim offered, as well as whatever my weird otaku friends recorded off of other channels I didn't have access to. I started reading the Sailor Moon manga when it first started getting translated and released in the US (with flipped pages! Left-to-Right! The Horror!). Manga began to be something of a genuine vice during high school since it was a much more expensive hobby than anime. But I loved how the manga typically delved much deeper into the storylines and managed to offer proper conclusions to the stories where the anime would more often than not just drop off. This was well before I learned the truth about how anime production works (being largely an advertisement for the manga). After College, though I kind of took a break from anime. I saw Lucky Star and something about it's vicious mockery of every anime trope and otaku culture in general kind of stole the magic away.
Now years later, I'm an elder millennial with kids of my own who love anime. My wife and I have watched so much anime with them at this point, I've far surpassed whatever I watched when I was a teen. 2020 was a great year for binging, let's just put it that way. It's been a lot of fun experiencing anime, many shows I've already seen as well as new ones, with my kids and enjoying their fresh perspectives.
As for things I'm enjoying on my own, thanks to Ishuzoku Reviewers I'm now a huge fan of the lewd-comedy manga genre and have been tearing through those. The lewder, the better, so long as the story is interesting and/or the comedy is good.
