I primarily use AniList nowadays, though I still occasionally update MAL.
About Me
My Rating System
I do not rate compilation films, specials, and OVAs linked to a parent series. Sequels are evaluated individually. I rate split cour shows as a whole and score only the first entry. If I feel like it, I may make an exception to any of the above.
I rate something as soon as I intend to watch no more of it, and not before. This happens when I either complete or drop it.
I have no objective criteria. The final scores are meant to convey my relative feelings for different tiers of anime. Good story, characters, thematic exploration, and so on usually contribute to my overall enjoyment, but not necessarily. Having said that, I tend to value the overall atmosphere and feel of a title more highly than the quality of the writing. I value my own impressions over all else when rating.
In any case where I am torn between two scores, I will usually go for the lower of the two.
Another thing to note is that my scores tend to drop over time. Some of this is a consequence of me moving to the full 10 point scale, and some is due to how my opinions of shows I either found 'meh' or disliked lower over time. My intention is to have an average score as close to 5.00 as possible.
10: A score reserved for my current favorite anime. Normally, only one title could have this rating at a time, but two are currently tied for this spot.
9: A favorite of mine. Tends to be the top ~5% of what I've completed.
6-8: My feelings are overall positive, to varying degrees depending on the exact score.
5: I don't feel strongly one way or the other.
4: I start to feel negatively, but my impressions are not too strong. Includes ambivalence.
3: Disliked it.
2: Absolutely hated it. Most completed titles with this rating are either short, something I watched under a contract, or remnants of foolhardy days I'd rather forget. No-drop 'master race' my ass.
1: Why the fuck was this made? Terrible beyond redemption, to the point that its very existence is offensive.
Drop Policy
Since I am not fond of wasting my time on worthless drivel, I drop anime fairly easily. I'm already bad enough at managing my time; I don't need even more difficulty finding time for the things I enjoy. For this reason, I can and will drop anything at any time and for any reason. I found a string of episodes boring? Dropped. It violates some of my writing and media pet peeves? Dropped. It couldn't hold my attention through the first episode? Dropped. It irritates me for a seemingly petty reason? Dropped.
My application of this rule is fairly inconsistent; I may find irredeemable trash ironically entertaining enough to finish it, and drop shows that are significantly better. However, I will not keep watching something I dislike solely because it is well received.
My tolerance wanes as time goes on, so I drop things nowadays that I may have sat through previously.
Anime I drop prior to completing the first episode will not appear in my dropped list.
