JwSS is basically a version of SSy in which the humans and the others get along. Also, the people in JwSS seem to take the threat of becoming extinct rather lightly, whereas paranoia about this drives SSy's plot. The words of each, though, are mutually surprisingly similar.

There are obvious similarities between Makishima and Izaya, and also some similarities between their respective nemeses – Kougami and Shizuo. Both are set in Toukyou, often in the dark. There's a certain focus on philosophy in each, which usually comes from Makishima or Izaya, but occasionally comes from other characters.

They're both about future controlled societies whose maintainers have great fear that they could be destroyed by any one person. Hence, they zealously dispose of people who have any chance of causing trouble. The main character in each is thrown into a crisis, despite being inexperienced.

Both concern the morals of killing people deemed bad for society.

Asian Kung-Fu Generation (who do the YST OP - Maigo Inu to Ame no Beat) and The Pillows (who do all of the music in FLCL) are similar bands. Both have been asked to open for Oasis, but The Pillows turned it down for the lulz. Maybe it's because of the above point, but I feel that both series have a kind of joy about them. They're both (too) short, and try to pack everything they've got into that space. Speed-talking ensues, and it's a task to keep up with the references and trains of thought. Both also maintain interesting and confusing stories whilst having a good deal of comedy.

Izaya and Ozu have similar views on humans, and like to show their love! Also, the {Mikado, Anri, Masaomi} and {Watashi, Akashi, Ozu} groups are similar: a girl and two guys who seem to be her only possible love interests, and Watashi & Mikado are very similar in personality (Ozu & Masaomi smile more).

Uncannily similar casts - Izaya, Shizuo and Shinra become Souma, Satou and Takanashi, and they maintain similar characteristics. If you watched Durarara first (as I did), it should be a laugh.

There are multiple time lines, and the main character is currently in the wrong attractor field (where the bad ending always happens) and trying to get to the right one (where he is happy). Also, the main character of Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei sort-of gets Reading Steiner.

The Baccano Specials are almost like an introduction to Durarara and some of its ideas. Particularly when they're talking about the immortal rat, and also much of what Graham says.
