CCA and R3 are unfortunately similar in more ways then one migth think. It's a basic requirement that you've already watched 3 recap movies minimum, they both attempt to rethread old ground and settle scores plus character threads that had in both cases been seemingly ended a literal decade ago. Both films relie on what amounts to a cash-grab awe factor premise and neither of them succeeds in out preforming their predecessors, instead just covering the same thematic routes while introducing a whole slue of new characters to be expendable and perform the functions the old cast already did. Their both around two hours in length and interestingly their productions both pale compared to property from less then half a decade later (F91 for all it's narrative faults is a far better production that Counterattack, and the likes of '86' are already far and away outperforming any of the mech fights in Resurrection among other elements). Of course their both produced by Sunrise to boot. And maybe most importantly, I'm very much so in the minority as someone who dislikes both these films vehemently, as such if you like one of them the chances are you'll almost definitely like the other for much the same or at-least similar reasons, so go and enjoy yourself with my unasked for blessingđź‘Ť.

School Days

To me Shuffle and School days are two sides of the same coin in the same way Neon Genesis Eva and End of Eva are. Like those, one gently taps it's audience on the shoulder and asks you to consider your own morality and fantasies, the other grabs you by both perverted shoulders and shakes violently. Where Shuffle takes a somewhat sympathetic look at the ramifications of harem anime and the effects such a fantasy would have on the real people involved, School Days does much the same but by having it's male lead take all the harem protagonist's traits and turning them up to 11. That is, of course just a very surface level look at both shows, which conversely have layers of subtle character building and intricate, if sometimes dramatic, stories to tell. Shuffle is particularly focused on using it's fantasy concepts as metaphor for telling stories about mental health and terminal illnesses, while School Days takes a close look at the insidious friend groups and relationships that can form during a teenagers formative - well - school days (pardon the pun). If you liked one, you'll probably enjoy the other, thought be warned both include minor nudity and violence.

Aside from the obvious ( a duo of pink haired pycho heroines ) if you enjoyed either of these shows you should enjoy the other. Both have a great OsT and above average animation for the most part and while their stories differ, there more similar then you might initially think. Firstly they both buckle under the weight of their own respective plot holes and contrivance, yet remain enjoyable and highly binge-able. Additionally both start with piles of potential, have a second Act that goes off the rails and a third Act that some-how manages to somewhat stick the landing and tie up many of the lose ends while simultaneously giving characters a degree of pay-off. As mentioned, if you enjoyed one, you'll probably find the other fun two.

Shuffle is an often passed over harem anime from the mid-2000s. Like Rent-a-girlfriend, it challenges the realities of harem animes ( along with questioning the likes of high-school and fantasy elements in anime ) but unlike rent-a-girlfriend, the full length run allows the show time to breath and gives each of its stories and characters time to be fleshed out, ultimately providing a much better experience and one of the best harems in the genre. If you liked Rent-a-girlfriends 'realistic' depiction of a harem and flawed protagonist, then shuffle should prove even more enjoyable.

School days is an often maligned visual novel adaptation, however if your looking for a harem anime that mixes up the genre troops and one with a truly un-redeemable, extreme protagonist, then schools days is a much better candidate to Rent-a-Girlfriend.
