This is my first anime ever and I would want to give my honest opinion on it.
First off I just want to say that this season was a masterpiece. Yes I agree that it started off awful with the worst fillers ever in the Pokemon anime but after that it’s full of characters and Pokemon development, new arcs and new characters and rivals as well. We even got the best villain arc in Pokemon. Since this is the final season of this series, we were also able to see how much each of the characters have grown as a person.
Now let me talk about
...
the characters
Ash- This is the best version of Ash I have ever seen both in XY and XYZ. However his character development here was the best and the most satisfying to watch. Ever since he have the ash greninja form, he was over relaying on it a lot and that let to his downfall such as losing to the 8th gym leader and also losing to a rival that admires him a lot. After losing to the 8th gym, ash and greninja and a small argument but after some words from Serena, Ash decided to rethink what he have done wrong and apologise to his companions and greninja and with that, he wasn’t so focus on using greninja as much and wanted to give other Pokemon a chance like his pikachu and Talonflame since they were able to get some wins. Talonflame took out the Pokemon that took out greninja previously and Greninja took out mega abmasnow due to both their teamwork. This is what I call true character development from a main character since he was able to learn from his past mistakes with the friends around him. I think other main characters like Takemichi should have this treatment as well
Serena- She is one of my favourite poke girls. When she started as a trainer, she did not know what she wanted to do and have tried out different things but after awhile, when she started performing, she realised how much it could inspire others and also have learned from rivals such as Shauna. Her bigger character development was mainly in the previous seasons but once she met Eevee in this series, she relieased she had a bigger responsibility to take on since Eevee’s personality is different from her other Pokemon and I think she took up that role very well. In a dance tag battle with Ash, she used eevee but eevee was struggling but she never gave up on Eevee which hence allows it to evolve. She might not get first place in the biggest performing competition but atleast she made it far to the semi final. Another moment was after the team flare arc in that one episode where here and Shauna had a big performance in lumiose city and they had a huge performance there and after that, Serena decided that she really wanted to do performance and had a fixed goal.
Clement- I remembered at the start of the series, he wasn’t a good gym leader at all but looking at the changes, I can see he really has change a lot as a person as he really got stronger when travelling with ash. Not much to say here since all his focus was on the previous season and this season he felt like a normal side character but one moment that really touched me was when he had to sacrifice clembot in order to save the world. This was a though decision since he was really close with clembot and after the sacrifice, he knew he still had to push on since the war isn’t over yet. Despite having lesser character development than other characters in this season, I still enjoy him a lot as a character and he is a fun one to be with
Bonnie- Ngl at first I find her annoying like another Max but her role in this season was the most important upon meeting squishy in the first episode. Since they did not know squishy is Zygarde, she thought it was a normal Pokemon to take care off and thought team flare was after it just to abuse it for the sake of it. However, her moments with squishy was really inspiring since this was her build up moment. She also played the biggest role in the team flare arc in protecting 2 squishy and it was emotional when before squishy left, he gave her special gratitude to Bonnie and that is an anime moment that really touched me. She was annoying in the previous season but after watching this season, I really appreciate her more as a character cause even Mad has some moment that was touching.
Now I have talked about the main characters, I would want to talk about the rivals. Firstly, I just wanna say these are the best set of rivals in the anime. I mean they might not be as good as Paul but they are definitely close to second. Firstly we have Sawyer which met Ash awhile back in the last season. He was very inspired by Ash since ash started off stronger than him but he took down notes and ash’s battling style and slowly he even caught up to him and even got ahead off him once to get the final badge and their finale in the kalos league was peak. Another Rival was Alain. He was just another obstacle that was in Ash’s way and it pushes Ash to train even harder to beat Alain but later we find out that Alain is working for team flare since he thought they are helping the world but he decide to betray them since they are destroying the world instead. But back to the point, he was the reason why Ash have to push himself as a trainer to get stronger and in the kalos league.
Now I am sure this season has a lot of goods but it has a lot of down sides as well.
First up, I just want to say that this season is mixed around with random and unnecessary fillers, like I mentioned, after the first episode, the next 4 were the worst fillers pokemon had. I mean I am ok with filler but they just feel random and were paced random in this series
Another downside I have is that the kalos league was rushed. Like way too rushed. It started off ok with Trevor vs Alain and 2 charizards duke it out in a match but once its ash turn to battle, they only show his first knockout and skip the whole match and the episode right after, they skipped like half off all matches and just announced ash is going to the semi final. Like what the actual fuck. That episode was a decent rival battle to see who would challenge ash in the semi final and Sawyer took the win over Tierno. However one of the worst things imo was Ash losing to Alain. I mean I can understand but I don’t like it at the same time since Alain was a rival for Ash to overcome and I am sure everyone want to see Ash finally win against a rival he have never beaten before but the only achievement they showed was Greninja managing to land the strongest attack on charizard. Him losing kinda makes the whole rival thing irrelevant as well.
However, the biggest L in this season was the ending. Who even thinks it’s a good idea to release Greninja like that. Feels like he went through everything just to get release. That was a huge disrespect to Greninja and a pointless release at the same time since what team flare planted was still left behind but they already stopped team flare a few episodes ago. Yea this is by far one of the worst endings in all of anime
However despite its flaws and its terrible ending, I don’t think it affected my enjoyment to this season since I was more focus on the peaks instead of the mids. It’s the best animated series in Pokemon as well. I can definitely understand why some people prefers the XY series over XYZ and this is a show not just this season but the whole series is one I would rewatch in a few years time. This was also what got me into pokemon which is my first anime. This anime as a whole done so much for me and I would never forget it
