Both are technical masterpieces--featuring beautifully animated fight sequences, sounds and scores. If you're looking for an amazing action series, look no further than these. Beyond the technical aspects, they are also both quite visceral in nature--raising the question of whether or not we need to abandon our humanity to defeat the enemy, and exploring the consequences of doing so.

We are presented a seemingly utopian society in which everyday hardships seem to be a thing of the past. Clearly, this society is far from perfect and holds some dark secrets. As the mystery unravels, the pitfalls of the supposedly perfect society are explored in frightening detail. Dystopian fiction at its finest.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Both series are centred around intricate and extremely well-thought out plots, and they are executed to near perfection. They feature a similar premise, in that a main character from both series must...shall we say, shoulder the burdens of the entire world in a manner that can't be appreciated by others.

If you're looking for amazing shows that deconstruct and utterly subvert the mecha and mahou shoujo genres, look no further than NGE and MSMM. Because it doesn't get any better than these. Under the guise of ostensibly happy-go-lucky settings, both shows take a dramatic serious turn as they explore the psyches of children who are thrust into life-threatening situations, and why they are unsuited for being there. Very dark themes are prevalent and developed very thoroughly in both. And suffice it to say, the directors for both these series have the balls to execute a truly unorthodox, wonderful ending (in the case of Evangelion, I'm referring to the movie). Both are absolutely must watch.

Both are seminal must-watch mecha series from Gainax. But they are not similar--rather they should be watched because they contrast so well. Whereas TTGL boasts over-the-top action and is an all-around fun show, NGE goes down to the nitty gritty of piloting mechas, and is ultimately psychological and somewhat depressive. Both shows are also complemented by very nicely developed characters.

ef: A Tale of Memories.
add

Both these dramas involve high-school romances, and feature a male protagonist who, though initially a delinquent, is spurred onto the right path through the influence and guidance of family and friends. Both are very character-driven, and while the characters in Clannad are more fleshed out than those in Ef, Ef is significantly more condensed and loaded. If you're up for an emotional rollercoaster with great artwork, music and characters, watch these.

ef: A Tale of Memories.

Makoto Shinkai played a big part in both, so that's a guarantee of at least artistic quality. Beyond that, both these animes are very simple and poignant dramas that deal with adolescent romance, and also heavily explore the theme of distance--Ef in the form of memory loss for one, and 5 cm/s with physical and temporal distance. Both exhibit a rather cold and melancholic atmosphere, and are rather tragic--though Ef delivers a happy ending in the vein of Clannad whereas 5 cm/s does not. If you liked one of them, you'll certainly enjoy the other.

Kara no Kyoukai Movie 5: Mujun Rasen
add

Both masterfully employ non-linear narrative as a mystery/unexplained occurrence is slowly revealed as disjointed "puzzle pieces" fall into place throughout their stories. Dark atmospheres and palettes are typically used in both, though Baccano frequently provides comic relief whereas KnK seldom does. Nonetheless, fans of action will find plenty to like in both KnK 5 and Baccano, with both featuring top-notch, smoothly animated fights and occasionally over-the-top gore.

Katanagatari
add

Both are adaptations of light novels written by Isin Nisio, and both are extremely heavy on dialogue. The style of humour employed in both Bakemono and Katana is very similar, so if you like one you're sure to enjoy the other. Also, though Bakemonogatari and Katanagatari seem like the typical harem and shonen series, both quickly break the confines of their respective genres.

Toaru Majutsu no Index

Both SnS and Index are produced by J.C. and incorporate much of the same magical elements. As expected, the art and animation employed in both are very similar, and overall they portray similar moods and tones (Index is like SnS with less moe).

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha
add

Both feature badass mask-wearing dual-personality protagonists who are trying to change the world in one form or another (Lelouch in a much more outward manner). Both shows also make use of mysterious, even mystical green-haired women who have a strong influence on the male lead. Of the two, Code Geass has the more grandiose plot and is more overtly entertaining, while DtB exudes subtler themes and tones. If for whatever reason you haven't seen either of these shows, do so now :P

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
add

Somewhat similar artistic direction, both incorporate thematic elements of distance and letting go of an unreachable love(5 cm/s more so). Both also exhibit melancholic tones, though TokiKake is for the most part much more light-hearted and entertaining. If you liked one, definitely give the other one a shot.

Haha, like who didn't see this one coming. Same author and studio, both have seemingly disjointed stories (Baccano to a much larger extent) and huge, colourful casts that all eventually come together for an exciting finale. Not to mention, both are incredibly entertaining!

If you liked
Clannad: After Story

Toradora!

Both feature similar entertaining romcom styles, though Toradora leans more towards comedy while Clannad (especially AS) has more drama. While Clannad has stronger thematic development and is more poignant overall, if you liked one you will probably like the other.
