I've been seeing a lot of negative reviews on this, but this anime is by far my favourite anime and I feel the need to stick up for it. Words cannot describe how deeply this anime has impacted me. Maybe the reason some people dislike it so much is because they're not a huge fan of blood, violence & nudity (Which there is a lot of, fair warning to anyone who's planning on watching.) But to me, these things don't play a factor in how great I think the anime is, because this is the only anime that has ever really made me really emotional.

The basis of the storyline follows a couple different people, but the main protagonist is a young man named Kohta who, along with his cousin, discover a girl alone and naked on a beach. Later on, they realize that the girl they have is actually a part of a fast-growing species called Diclonius, recognizable by the horns on their head and 2 invisible arms. Now, it's been a year since I last saw the series so the memories are a little fuzzy, but this story line is one of the greatest ones to ever appear in an anime. Not only is it smart and original, but the basis of the Diclonius problem alone sets a well thought out storyline for the next 13 episodes. The plot never gets weak because there's always something going on, and the only single complaint I have is the story gets a little boring when we're focused on the facility, but even then the plot gets rather important when we're focused on the facility. This is the kind of story that makes you feel satisfaction once you finally have uncovered everything in the story and it all makes sense. The end was also really good, involving the viewer to interpret some of what happened. Overall, the plot of this story is absolutely brilliant and I can guarantee you'd never find an anime like it.
Art: (8/10)
There's not too much to say about the art style; it's well done but nothing exactly pops out, pretty average for a 2004 anime series.
Sound: (9/10)
Although there wasn't much change in music because the mood never changed throughout the entire anime, the well-known song "Lillium" is a truly amazing piece of music. Even though I'm not a huge fan of classical music, I fell in love with the song as soon as I heard it, and to this day every time I hear it I am completely overcome with emotion.

*MAY HAVE SPOILERS
Personally, I loved Lucy/Nyuu's character. Some may find it corny or overused to have the split personality character, but for this specific character I found it absolutely brilliant. I feel like the split personality trait shows the childish side of Nyuu that she has had to hide from the world since birth in order to be deemed normal, and the Lucy side expresses all of her built up anger and aggression from all of the years of being treated like an animal; basically living in a cage her entire life. Some of the other characters aren't exactly the greatest though; Kohta's character wasn't too bad, if you put aside the fact that he was a little plain and boring, but his back story involving the death of his sister improves his character. Kohta's cousin Yuka is another story. Personally, I dislike Yuka because a lot of her character is spent whining about pointless things and just overall complaining to Kohta. I feel she is the only weak character in the series though, the other minor characters prove to be good and solid character, but Yuka's character definitely brings down the scale.
Overall, I have this anime a 10/10 because not only does this anime represent a very futuristic concept, but afterwards you're left wondering what would happen if a similar thing were to happen in today's society. It shows the importance of treating others right and the consequence of abusing people for who they are. The anime is extremely entertaining, well written, and has all the key factors for a perfect anime.
