This is the same ol' basic Sunrise show with a young protagonist, that somehow has a mecha that gets into a bigger conspiracy of an interplantery/galactic threat that only the MC and his friends can deal with. If you like Sunrise tropes like that, you'd probably like this show but the subs for this show ARE VERY BAD. I thought Yamato 3's subs were bad because they were based on Starblazers scripting but this show is single-handedly the worst subbing effort I've ever seen. They'll call the MC a her at times, along with using the incorrect pronoun for a shitload of other characters.

Another subbing moment that just makes it all the less fun to watch is when Watta, the main character, runs to school and runs passed the Trider and says "You always have a beautiful appearance. Hi, I'm going to school" that was enough for me to know I had to drop this show, atleast until someone resubs it or the subs get proof-read/edited because this was terrible and i've NEVER dropped a show because of this before.

Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Kawamori... I have loved you ever since I first watched Escaflowne. The way you drew mechas and created characters that felt real, that acted with emotion. The way you handled personal character development, and the impact of every movement a mech would make, the fluidity of a valkyrie switching to flight mode, gerwalk, or battroid. the anime world, I have no doubt that you are a great husband/father. I forever fear and dread the day that comes when you and I will both no longer be part of this world at the same time. I would sacrifice my own life if it were the only thing that could make you direct a new Macross show in cel-animation. You have given me so much joy, and heartbreak over the years. I remember the first time I watched Macross Plus and my heart was broken into a million pieces. Although some people may not like your work, I will always hold it dear. I wanted you to return home, and you did, but unfortunately my love couldn't harbor with modern day Macross or Basquash or Aquarion. I was crying, I was bawling, yet I remembered these words that changed my life forever, "Dedicated to you, our future pioneers". Char's Counter Attack, the finale between Amuro and Char. What the One Year War, Gryps War, and First Neo-Zeon War were all culminating too. We could finally see what would prevail, the ideology of destroying Earth so that humanity could evolve, or patiently waiting for humans (for oldtypes) to evolve naturally. Turns out, this movie is a hot mess. How can a movie from such an acclaimed and awesome director be so bad?
One thing I will say about this movie is that it's one of the most beautifully animated movies I've ever seen. It combats with the likes of Macross: Do You Remember Love with

being a masterpiece of animation, every single cel in this movie is extremely articulate and crafty.
Also tying into the animation is the mechanical design of all suits in this movie. The sleek black contrast on the Nu Gundam is flawless, it can only be described as one of the coolest and most well-designed Mobile Suits in the entire franchise. The Sazabi although bulky is still an amazing suit and I think it sums up one thing perfectly, Char's ego.
Characters: All the returning characters within this story are all done exceptionally well besides Char (I will get into this more with the story). Amuro has fully matured into a young man and Bright is a hardened war veteran, who has come to care very much about Amuro's well-being. After all, they did fight in the One-Year War together. Hell, Bright fought in 5 god damn wars in 17 years in the UC!Remember Astionage? A crewmate we see in all of Zeta and ZZ well guess what happens to him, he gets a 2 frame death and if you blink you miss it. With the new characters: Hathaway is an alright character, he's just a worse version of Katz but he plays his role. Quess isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be but she is not interesting at all, every time she's on the screen. Nanai and Miguel are also interesting but you can tell they're only there to "further" expand the plot but don't really go anywhere. My BIGGEST problem with the characters is there not a SINGLE appearance of Sayla, Kamille, or Judau. Char's own sibling WASNT even in this fucking movie.
Story: Okay, now we're at the worst part of this movie: the story. Like I said prior, the best scenes are with Amuro and Char, and when they're on screen together it's magic, they play off each other so well just as they did in the original. My 1st problem with this story is how everything that happens when they're not on screen together, or separate, doesn't seem to matter at all to the story. It's fluffed out so horrendously. My 2nd problem in this movie is Char's motives. I guess they just dropped the entire plot point from Zeta and ZZ when, you know, you can sense new types or spawn new type energy from quite literally anywhere. There's no canonical reason as to why Char did what he did. You think he's finally changed, he'll finally be willingly to let oldtypes live peacefully till they're ready to evolve. But nope he goes into a bat-shit crazy, egotistical destruction of Quatro, of himself, into a pitiful version of Char. He wants people to evolve but he himself hasn't evolved because the guy is willing to drop axis onto Earth and kill the entire population. Not all humans are bad, there are some people weighed down by Earth's gravity that cannot reach the sky because the Federation has cliipped their wings. His motive for destroying Earth is not very well thought out, I thought his motives in 0079 and Zeta were good but his descent into that ideology is just terrible. My final problem, as I brought up earlier, is the lack of prior characters not appearing in this story. Tomino quite literally ended ZZ with Judau going on a 5 year journey to get to Jupiter (you're telling me in this advanced ass universe were you can literally fly robots, you can't go into the depths of space any faster? What the hell have you been wasting your government tax money on?) he wrote him out of the story because he knew Judau would kick Chars sorry ass. Kamille's exclusion makes no sense, he's one of the people who got through to Char yet Amuro nor the federation thought it'd be a good idea to bring him in. I understand that Char didn't want to be a father figure to Quess but Char was like a mentor to Kamille; especially when it came to his feelings and piloting the Gundam. If anyone was able to change Char it was either Kamille or Sayla. I love Sayla, I truly do, she's one of my favorite characters in the entire series but I for the life of me can't stand how she was written out (Or if she was even originally in this movie to begin with) of the story. It's so frustrating because at the end of ZZ she asks Bright to kill Char, so what the fuck happened between Zeta and ZZ for her to know that he needs to be killed? Guess what, you'll never find out cause Sayla isn't in the movie.
This movie is just one big pile of disappointment, so unless you wanna see Amuro hand Char his ass again, there's no other reason to see this movie. It makes me sad because I truly love Tomino's work on the original, Zeta, ZZ and F91. I'm certain you could skip this movie, or even erase it from the timeline, and the events that came after would still happen just the same. Zeta into ZZ had an extremely impactful subplot with Haman appearing to help the Titans then later on becomes the main villian herself, now that's some good writing.
