That is the question I keep asking myself while watching this show. Time and time again I was wondering if the show was suppose to be a dark and serious show or a slice of life because sure the first episode gripped you with the topic of suicide which you realize right off the bat that it was going to be a dark show. However, as the plot continues it switches genres in a pinch trying to add comedy to a seemingly dark and serious show. For example, mid-series after the climax of the first half of this show it immediately died down with a
musical number done by the main characters. This is where they all tap into their inner teen idol and did a choreographed dance that went along with it.
Speaking of the characters the show presented a quite a wide variety of characters ranging from a guy with a glasses fetish to a girl that is a nervous wreck. Sure I will admit that these characters sightly developed over time but it is hard to spot. These characters top traits come out when it feels like a slice of life show. I am only going to describe the the most important which is Akihito and Mirai.
Akihito: The main character of the show who is the one that I mentioned before who has a glasses fetish and proves it time and time again that he has one. That aside he was a decent character who has amazing power to the point that the best warriors in the city can't handle him. His back story is not there and his origins of how and where he got this power is unknown. Even though we already know he has parents the youmu side is from his dad and his human side is from his mom. But the show doesn't present the dad or the mom is not taken seriously as a person who apparently knows everything that is going on. Who is also a extremely powerful warrior for no good reason of how she is presented. Which she demonstrates in the 2nd to last episode. Which left massive holes in the plot and character in general.
Mirai: The main female character who is a slight nervous wreck who doesn't know how to act a situation but as the series continue she develops into less of a wreck but more into a brave person who in the end made really hard decisions to keep her friend alive. This resulted in a better character development in most shows that I have seen recently so I will respect that. However, her back story is a little different as I said before during Akihito's paragraph that there are holes in the plot and her character too. For example her power and her clan, it asks the question why was it such a bad thing to have her power, why was she the only one left, Where did she get her training from (because you don't start off as a highly capable fighter ever since you were born), and I could go on with the list. But overall she was a good character who in one episode has a reason for everything that she did prior to that episode so some things are explained but not a lot. One more thing this is a major spoiler for anyone reading this before watching the show so move on to the next segment, The last episode when Mirai died and was brought back to life was strange and didn't make sense because how do you die in a dimension and then all of a sudden reappear like nothing happen this is also not explained which confused me. The reason being she already know she was going to die when she defeated beyond the boundary because she already died in the real world then why is she alive, I get it happy ending and all but still not explained.
As I continue, this review is not here for the nitpicks this is also here to praise it on certain and important aspects such as the animation which is immaculate from start to finish. This show has presented itself to be a masterpiece. I will even go as far to say this is on par as fate zero's animation. The ending credits and opening is a joy to watch and it would have been an honor to watch this in 1080p or even 720p. The fight scene were entertaining and a joy to watch to the point where I was re-watching most of it.
The sound for the show was also top-notch in its own right it keeps the atmosphere of the show whether it be a slice of life side or serious side. However, highlights goes to the opening and closing song which does well to get you hyped to watch the rest of the episode. Also, the smooth transition of the final scene of the episode to the ending credits and song which leaves some decent but not rage inducing cliff-hangers. The animation and the sound were also some of the only reasons I kept watching this.
In conclusion the show was a hit or miss (sometimes mostly miss for what the show is suppose to present because of the random genre changes) with almost bland characters (almost) a lot of random holes in the plot only to be topped off with fantastic animation, and great sound. If Kyoto animation filled these random holes of the plot make characters back story a little more... there, and chose which genre they wanted to go for this would have easily be one of my tops favorite anime of all time along side with steins gates, gurren lagann, madoka magica, and fate zero.
Remember this is my personal opinion and if you want to clarify anything for me or help me "understand" (I tried the best I can even watch it twice to make sure I don't sound dumb) the show a little better feel free to message me
