It's OK milady and Year of the Dragon has been tough on everyone.
Universal Century-wise, I would delve into Mobile Suit Gundam:The Origin (manga). You could watch the standalone 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket whenever you like. 08th MS Team definitely has a beautiful artstyle and a wonderful English dub. Kiki is still my favorite character. I'm a sucker for tomboys and redheads. Too bad I'll never see her get redesigned by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. His character designs are sexy and not saccharine like manga characters so far (I don't like childish or chibi looking characters).
As for alternative universe Gundam stuff, G Gundam, SEED and Wing are all good for beginners. The Gundam fanbase frowns upon 00 and AGE's mech designs.
As we can see, space opera doesn't stop there and I look forward to reading some lesser-known space opera comics after Copperhead (very Wild West as the title suggests).
Other than that, I love Macross, but I hate that character Minmay. No wonder Gundam SEED has Lacus Clyne, an improvement of Minmay. A pop princess that isn't spoiled and one that doesn't get boyfriends for validation. Lacus is, without a doubt, more physically attractive to men as seen in said movie as of late. Freedom, that is and it's nice to see Maaya Sakamoto reprise her role as Lunamaria (I would sure love to hear Princess Terria speaking in her original language).
Den of Geek has an article about future Macross movies and I hope the anime industry will release one next year. I've been waiting like forever now. Maybe the animations will be as good or better than SEED Freedom, who knows.
Thank you for responding and I didn't know that Samus was a woman until I was about 13 years old. Now I see her as a space tomboy, dedicating her life to fighting bad guys. Kind of like a tomboy in a cyberpunk manga world that I know. That my semitomboyish friend from Maryland knows about too (big fan of cyberpunk, Dot Hack and girly romantic comedy). Samus also reminds me more or less of another video game tomboy called Virginia Maxwell (Yes! I love Wild Arms and I had to learn Japanese arduously for Second Ignition because the story is way deeper than some RPGs).
Japanese particles are harder with more inconsistent grammatical function than Min Chinese, but I really wanted to know the canonical Silent Möbius finale before getting into its sequel from 2013 (beautiful modern manga artwork, too bad Japan doesn't make anime for art anymore; all about money and doing 12 episodes a season which I like to call lazy).
Back in my day, anime had way more than 12 episodes per season like say Monster Rancher or Zoids. Gundam Wing and even G Gundam (my favorite since childhood) still have more episodes per season than Witch From Mercury which was only a little better than other anime as of late.
Some believe that manga is more convenient than anime, but not everyone wants to flip a page and read through more word balloons.
After having read Silent Möbius QD and prequel, I plan on reading indie comics. Anyone can effortlessly use AI to summarize a volume of some mainstream graphic novel. I'm not that crazy about Marvel, DC, IDW, Dark Horse or most of MAL's top manga. Simply because I'm not a normie and I'm not that hardcore about said media.
By the way, I totally forgot that your birthday is practically next door to that of said semitomboy from Maryland. Same birthday as Megumi Toyoguchi, the best Rosie and also known as Revi. I just love her tomboyish range that she does in different media. I'm glad that she got her role reprised for that recent Gundam SEED movie along with various other veteran seiyuu (my big Pisces friend loves Persona and Akira Ishida).

Have you been studying Japanese too and what do you like most about Samus Aran?
