Very dark, violent, and stylish '80s action that's very much a product of its time.

Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex
add

Both shows are believable visions of crime in the future; Cowboy Bebop is about bounty hunters, while Ghost in the Shell is a cop show. They are both mostly episodic but some episodes are tied together by an ongoing plot that reveals some characters' backstories. They both also have excellent art, animation, and music.

Perfect Blue

Both works have a dark, unsettling tone and serious art style. You will be wondering which events are all in the protagonist's head and which really happened. They also raise the question, "Which concept of the self is the 'real' self?"

Serial Experiments Lain
add

Both feature a young, shy, possibly mentally ill, yet deeply flawed protagonist who is desperate for connection with others. Due to circumstances beyond their control involving advanced technology, they end up having to make choices affecting the fate of themselves and many others, and struggle with the selfish choice versus the morally correct choice. Both works have a reputation of being excessively confusing but make sense when you realize it's the ideas that matter, not a literal interpretation of what exactly happened on-screen.

No Guns Life
add

Action-focused sci-fi with a cool, gritty art style depicting a creative world full of unique characters. The tone of the story is more humorous and lighthearted than one might expect at first glance. Both protagonists are men who had their heads turned into something non-human, and despite seeming imposing, often act in a comical way.

Redline
add

Like "Redline", the short "Running Man" takes place in a spacefaring future where racers risk their lives pushing their bodies and vehicles to their very limits for sport. However, while "Redline" makes racing seem awesome, "Running Man" is deathly serious. Both have dramatic art styles that convey the speed and intensity of what is happening.

Collection of 3 shorts involving Katsuhiro Otomo. Both have the format of one "artsy" short with an unconventional art style and minimal dialogue, one scifi ghost story with phenomenally detailed art, and one that treats a dire situation with technology gone wrong in a silly way.

Movies set in a dark fantasy version of our world filled with warriors, monsters, beautiful women, and supernatural powers. Worth it for the top-notch animation and tons of visual style and amazing fight scenes. Vampire Hunter D takes place in the distant post-apocalyptic future while Juubee Ninpuuchou takes place in feudal Japan.

Sci-fi about catching a terrorist, with great action scenes interspersed with large amounts of quiet philosophical dialogue. They involve biotechnology and are somewhat reminiscent of the Metal Gear Solid games. They also have an excellent English dub.

Devilman: Crybaby

Both shows feature supernatural powers and aren't shy about sex and violence, but that's not the point; they're most of all about friendship and betrayal, have a villain who is something of a classical Lucifer archetype, and end in a shocking manner.

Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor the Movie
add

Fairly hard sci-fi about cops in similar-looking near-future settings, who are fighting a mysterious hacker. Both films are relatively quiet and have scenes with philosophical dialogue or grand quotations, though Patlabor has a distinctive "'80s action movie" aspect Ghost In The Shell doesn't.

Though one is a mecha anime and the other takes place in the present day, both are love stories about an ordinary young man and a mysterious pink-haired girl with horns. Both girls are formidable monsters from a research facility who are a threat to humanity. As the series go on, the main characters' backstories seem more and more similar.

Adaptations of Hirohiko Araki works that are much more serious, dark, and violent than the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime that began in 2012. The similarities lie in the old-school art style and music, stoic protagonist, and involvement of mysterious powers and brain parasites.
