They are both mostly episodic but some episodes are tied together by an ongoing plot that reveals some characters' backstories. They both also have excellent art, animation, and music.

Both works have a reputation of being excessively confusing but make sense when you realize it's the ideas that matter, not a literal interpretation of what exactly happened on-screen.

Vampire Hunter D takes place in the distant post-apocalyptic future while Juubee Ninpuuchou takes place in feudal Japan.

Fairly hard sci-fi about cops in similar-looking near-future settings, who are fighting a mysterious hacker. Both films are relatively quiet and have scenes with philosophical dialogue or grand quotations, though Patlabor has a distinctive "'80s action movie" aspect Ghost In The Shell doesn't.

Messed-up characters and surprising plot twists. Towards the end you can really see the influence the original Devilman had on End of Evangelion.
