Serial Experiments Lain is difficult to rate. On one hand, the anime as a whole is enjoyable. On the other hand, it's very confusing, incoherent at times, some episodes are a bore to watch, and it just is obtuse overall. There's a lot going on here: questions of identity, what it means to be human, the progression of technology, and human evolution. While these are typical elements of cyberpunk anime, SEL doesn't handle these concepts in the best way compared to other similar anime. Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

I really liked the first season of Black Lagoon - it was the mature, gritty, animated version of an R-rated action thriller movie with an awesome female character in Revy. Overall, Black Lagoon Season 1 was really good but I felt had some pacing issues that sometimes made me nod off a little until the narrative and action picked back up again. Additionally, a couple of the stories in that season weren't as fun and energetic as others.
