I was personally a fan of it. One of the best episodes from the show imo. Yes, having L win instead of his successor would have been cool, but then we wouldn't have gotten the epic Light defeats L episode. I enjoyed Light's characterization here as by the finale, he truly has become the villain. And while that may take away from his morally grey character appeal, after getting older and reflecting, I feel like it was the right call to show how he's truly devolved into a clearly evil person thanks to his delusions and corruption. Also, as much as it would have been cool to see Light win, naratively, it just wouldn't work. And of course the fantastic dialouge and voice acting really sold it for me.

Yup. It's my cousin's favorite anime! Real glad you're also super into it. There's just this super fun vibe to the characters and the world it presents, this excellent balance of light and dark stuff
