I thought Kimi ga Nozomu Eien was a very touching love story. Sure I shed a tear over it and a few other animés, but Saikano is probably the first one that made me cry silently during the first watch.
Serial Experiments: Lain was actually worse, but it was only after I had seen it twice and began to truly understand it, which also led to more "true" feelings.
I really love/hate the ending of Saikano. No.... really, it is ingenious and probably the best part of the series. It urges me to rate it as a masterpiece, but let's not
...
get too excited ;)
The bad thing I can say about Saikano is that I often felt situations were running in circles. It's not so much the story as a whole, but more that Shuji and Chise were acting so predictably on the small scale.
I am a patient person, but I think it might turn off some people before they get to the more dramatical parts. In the large scope the series is very exciting, but on the small scope the acting actually becomes a little "boring" until towards the end.
Maybe I should describe "boring" as "a little too realistic" acting, and that doesn't mean it's just a bad thing. On the contrary, this might be the reason the emotional impact was so big; that with more "boring" and realistically acting characters it's easier to familiarize yourself with them.
But... the worst thing is probably that after watching the whole thing, there's really only a few things to think about (the ending, but I wont spoil it here). The emotional impact is large, but I don't think the effect will last for long.
I like sci-fi a lot.
Saikano had some pretty good elements in that genre, but my first impression of missiles spawning from practically nowhere was: "LOL!"
I'm sorry, but even at the end I couldn't take it that serious and it actually ruins the atmosphere a bit. Again, I like sci-fi a lot, but PLEASE make it at least a little believable.
Nano-tech, particle-level deformation, tachyon engines, laser beams and glowing people are fine, but big bulky rockets from thin air - it's a little hilarious. >_<
Oh wow, look how quickly I got into another mood.
Getting back to the essentials: Though I've pointed out a few negative things, Saikano has a good story and wonderful characters.
Definitely worth a watch if you like the combination of psi-fi and romance.
It is by my opinion extremely touching, however the effect is somehow temporary probably because of the not so complex storyline.
