While Junjou Romantica definitely has a more developed story, both are fairly well done and enjoyable for BL shows. Both are more modern with better looking art than the average BL - as opposed to dated looking. Lastly, both capture the angst, turmoil and most importantly humor that makes BL so fun while steering clear of being melodramatic or overly theatrical.

Mainly I think the producers had the same target audience for these 2 shows - probably 14 year old girls- and are in the same general genre. Having said that they're are pretty enjoyable with pseudo-dark plots and complicated relationships.

While I feel calling either of these animes "dark" is inaccurate, they do both share somewhat gothic sensibility (more like loli gothic than genuinely gothic). What could be considered dark about these animes is greatly lessened or broken up by the characters' personalities and a healthy does of humor. I think the characters relationships have several similarities as well. Mainly I think the respective creators had the same target audience in mind and catered to them appropriately.

Tetsuwan Birdy Decode:02

While Birdy lacks some of the epic-ness of TTGL, they are similar in many respects. Both successfully incorporate action into a meaningful and interesting plot, both question the the meaning of humanity, and both can pack an emotional punch. Additionally they both involve love, space and aliens, and I would say their visual style is similar.

Action, love and time jumping - what more could you want? Both these anime have epic love stories that cross time and space which of course involves actually jumping through time and space. Both have a fair amount of action, but still have a coherent plot - always nice. They also have a similar visual style, but Birdy luckily does not have the tacky CG effects like Noein.

It's rare to find an anime, or any show for that matter, that illuminates the human spirit or emotion, but oddly enough both these anime do it. *neither of these anime are random, they are deliberate and informed.

These are both so unique that it's hard to make a good recommendation based on similarities. While these shows are in many ways very different from each other, they are the only ones I've seen that are comparably amazing. That's not very descriptive, but if you loved one I think you'll enjoy the other.

The set up for these two seems very similar in the synopsis but they aren't as similar overall when you watch them as it makes it seem. Having said that, they are similar enough that if you like one you'll probably like the other one, but different enough that you cans still enjoy both of them with out it being to repetitive.
