Watching Clannad is like playing The Sims. You like it, you enjoy it, you have a good time. But do not seek anything complex here (you'd have to go for the After Story).
It's very doubtful if any person at the age of the show's characters would behave like this. The "development" of characters and story is very non-thrilling, it is probably supposed to stir your emotions. It is difficult to align yourself with the characters or their goals. Elfen Lied does not fit to categories. Though the show itself uses a lot of typical categories (abused girl, betrayal, love, hate, revenge, desire for power), the mixture which Elfen Lied offers cannot be labelled easily. But what it does, it delivers emotions and it has depth. Who are the monsters and who are the villains? Can you forgive horrible sins of Lucy when you see what/who brought her to such a track?
