Both Orange and Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso are shoujo mangas that deal with the the juxtaposed concepts of mortality and carpe diem. The mangas contain a similar background in which the mother of the male protagonist passes away, leaving a mental scar for the character. With the help of friends and especially the female protagonist, he overcomes this loss. The secondary focus of the stories would be enjoying the time you have with your friends while you are alive. The dramas also focus on performing an specific activity to help get over the loss. In the case of Orange, the male protagonist finds solace in a relay race with his friends. In the case of the My Lie in April, the male protagonist find solace in performing music with his friend. However, neither stories would be truly called romance as their progressions and themes focus not on eventually falling in love with the other main character but also spending and enjoying the time they have together. Both will make you cry, albeit for different reasons, but in the end they are heartwarming stories about youth.
