Both have as main theme the importance of family, especially the parenthood. How both shows portray the way of the main characters of fighting to grow up a child is superb in their own way, while Clannad: After Story is extremely dramatic and a truly masterpiece, in contrast with the kind slice of life pacing of Usagi Drop. Remember to watch Clannad first.

Angel Beats!

If Angel Beats made you cry, don't doubt it, try Clannad. While Angel Beats feels a bit rushed and its final episode, although is good, you have no time to fully empathize with the characters to enjoy the anime to its full potential, Clannad takes a first season with pretty good storyline to know the characters. This season has some of the best comic scenes i've ever seen (like Angel Beats) and some dramatic moments, but if you are looking for Angel Beats' drama... Here it is, Clannad: After Story, probably the best anime drama i've ever seen and you'll ever seen, a true masterpiece and personally my favourite anime. However, it is necessary to watch both seasons, so take a look.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Both are two brilliant executed masterpieces that deconstruct they respective genre in their own way, Eva the "Mecha" anime and Madoka the infamous "Magical Girl" one. Extremely deep, broken and attractive characters with an incredible OST by Yuki Kajiura and a little bit experimental animation. While NGE is an absolute mindfucking beast full of symbolism, Madoka is easier to understand, but has a big message like other Gen Urobuchi's anime like Fate/Zero or Psycho Pass.
