Before you read my review, this show has probably had the biggest impact for me, emotionally. I have probably never cried, ever and I'm not exaggerating, than any show than this. This is also a summary of the whole anime, so please do not continue if you don't want to be spoiled. If you want to see my final conclusion of the anime just scroll down to the last paragraph.
BTW, if there are any grammatical mistakes, its because I just wrote this once all in my head :D
******SPOILER ALERT******
The story takes place just where the first season of Clannad ended, where Tomoya Okazaki and Negisa
...
Furukawa are now officially couples. The show starts off with Negisa's Father, Akio, trying to organize a team to try to dominate another town's team in baseball. So Tomoya, is given the task to assemble a team to win for their town's representation. Eventually, they win and all is said and done. But the fact is, Graduation is around the corner and Negisa is still getting this fever which takes up most of her time in school, neglecting her ability to graduate high school. Tomoya is upset and wants to stay with her because he knows that Negisa would be alone again once she repeats school a second time. Especially when Negisa is so shy, preventing her from getting any new friends. But Negisa does not want him to repeat another year with her for a silly thing like that, and wants Tomoya to move on, because she knows that he will wait for her.
This show had to be one of the biggest impacts of my life, expressing how love creates strong bonds, with examples of Tomoya and Negisa. They begin to grow up, especially for Tomoya's sake since he wanted to go with the 'flow' and let life take him to where ever he goes too. He now works for the bakery of the Furukawa's, but eventually quits to be able to move out on his own because he is still living with Negisa's family. He then was eventually able to find a job with Yusuke's company, given him the ability to pay for his own expenses. The show tends to give an example of how a boy with nothing to live for, be able to find something to actually be alive for. The story also strengthens the bonds with Tomoya and Negisa eventually being married to each other and wanting to start a family together. Negisa becomes pregnant, with a girl named Ushio. But the problem was there were factors that if she had delivered the baby she would probably pass away.
With the introduction of a new character, the story had probably made me cry so much when Negisa dies, especially with the development of both Negisa and Tomoya, and seeing their lives together end. 5 years past, and Tomoya is trying to engulf his life with work, alcohol, and gambling in order for him to not remember the past. During those years he had hardly talked to his daughter, Ushio. And because of his stubbornness and his life still in the past,Sanae develops a plan for Tomoya to spend some time with Ushio. So, tricking Tomoya that they would all spend a vacation together as a family she wanted Tomoya to spend some time together with his daughter alone, so he could move forward from the past. He eventually finds her alone, with no one around and gives up, and decides to have a trip with her. During their trip, he shows no sign of even trying to be a good father, but he buys a toy for Ushio that he picks out for her. And once they get to their destination they find a beautiful lush field of sunflowers(I think those were the flowers), but Ushio had also lost the toy her father bought for her. With the sadness she has, Tomoya starts to realize he has been to the area before. He meets his grandmother where she tells him the story of his father and how Tomoya is following the same way he is doing what his father did to him. This moment probably made me a bit of tear jerker, when I finally saw Tomoya realize that his life was not over, and that he had found something to live for and that was Ushio.
From this moment of how the anime is going Tomoya wants to become a family again with Ushio. And the rest of the anime shows how their bond becomes stronger when they are hanging around more often. He is also able to show that he is also thankful for what his dad sacrificed for him and letting his father go back with his grandmother. During that moment, Ushio spots a light, in which it enters Tomoya. This light represents true happiness and also has the ability to give him a wish. Through their bonding moments of both Ushio and Tomoya, Ushio starts to develop the same symptoms as her mother Negisa, which is a sickness that can not be cured since they don't know whats causing the symptoms. And with Ushio's illness she starts to become worse and hasn't at all recovered. With her last wish Ushio wants to go to a trip with her father, but doesn't want to since she is still ill. Eventually, Tomoya gives up and decides to give Ushio one more last trip. This part made me cry the most because Ushio's strength was becoming weaker and they haven't even made it to the station. Ushio collapses and she was in the arms of Tomoya, with the last words coming out of her "I love you, Daddy." It just gushed the tears right out of me, and Tomoya starts to yell up in the sky calling to Negisa for this not to happen. :'(
I haven't talked about the girl and garbage doll yet, but from this moment she had also collapsed as well in the snow with the garbage doll still holding on to her refusing to leave her side. But the girl describes that they will be seeing each other in a different world with the lights connecting their worlds together. She eventually says that the robot, turns out to be Tomoya in a sense and Ushio is the girl. She reveals that they will meet up someday and will be seen in the world of Tomoya and Negisa, but with a different outcome. The scene fades away, with Negisa and Tomoya, on how they met where the blossom trees and the trail that leads to school is. Tomoya now has the choice of either meeting/talking to her, or ignoring and completely forgetting about her, therefore never having Ushio. But in the end he ends up talking to her, and next thing you know it they are back in the scene where Ushio is barely becoming born. Now if you got confused, the light I was talking about, where Ushio sees Tomoya receive it actually seems to have taken the fact that he had wished that his life of his loved ones dying, actually becomes an alternate reality, but he ends up with a more happier ending showing the family grow up and becoming a true family.
In Conclusion, this show had probably one of the best stories and character development in an anime, possibly (in my opinion) one of the best shows ever created. This being said, I really recommend it to anyone who wants to see both a very sad and happy show especially with one that can actually make you cry. I really enjoyed it, and actually started watching some of the shows again. Also, if you do watch this show I really, really, really, recommend you to watch the first Clannad in order to see how the development of the characters really progress into After Story. Overall, I give this anime a 10, because of the characters and especially the story. Thank you for reading and I hope I didn’t make this review too long because most of it is actually a summary of the show. :b

So the story begins with the start of a guy named Makoto who has been watching this girl in the train named Kotonoha which he thinks is really cute, but theres this urban legend that goes around saying that if you take a picture of the person you like you would be with him/her.
The story I thought was probably one of those shows where your like "oh cool- this show is probably going to have a happy ending with the person he likes..." But I did not expect anything to happen like this, especially on a show that contains cute high school girls just being ... |
