If you're using Firefox, I suggest you use the Rikaichan add-on plus its dictionary add-on, it allows you to see the meaning of kanji characters on mouse-over. (There might also be a version available for other browsers) It's very useful.
Here are the hiragana and katakana practice sheets, it's easier to memorize and remember them if you also practice writing the characters.
