I know you're thinking: "How is a sports manga similar at all to a music manga?" Well, while the subject matter differs entirely, the themes and characters are all too similar (in a good way). Both of these follow a young man with little direction in their lives; that is, until Sakuragi finds basketball and Koyuki finds music. Other similarities: artwork starts off meh, gets better as it goes on (always fun seeing that transition); the authors' (Inoue Takehiko [Slam Dunk], Harold Sakuishi [Beck]) clearly depict their passion not only for storytelling, but for the hobby which is shown; and, finally, both were adapted into well-received anime.

Ninja Slayer From Animation

Both are made by Trigger. Both are ridiculous, over-the-top action-thrillers about renegades with a vision of justice (one is a cop, one is a ninja). Both are modern anime masterpieces.

Kill la Kill

Same awesome animation, same outrageously over the top action sequences, same slights at the very genres they embody, and overall just incredibly epic. The only major differences are that Gurren Lagann has better animation quality, and Kill la Kill has a better, more coherent story.

Death Note

Monster and Death Note alike follow a "battle" of sorts between two brilliant minds, but where Death Note falls short midway through the series, Monster just continues to get better and better. If you liked Death Note, Monster is essentially a seinen, more fleshed out version of it. If you liked Monster, you'll like the first half of Death Note.

These manga are both very dismal slice-of-lifes with endings that verge more on the precariously reassuring than happy. The feature characters are all dysfunctional (in a "something terrible happened to me in the past" kind of way) and just trying to get by in the world. I would chalk both of these comics up to manga versions of Grave of the Fireflies: the best mangas that you never want to read again.

Samurai Champloo

While Cowboy Bebop often accrues more glory, both of these shows are made by the same directors, and, personally, I enjoyed Champloo more. The main characters are all very similar, and both series maintain an episodic style up until the last few dramatic episodes, which are both fantastic in their own ways.

Vagabond

Both of these manga have very similar protagonists: sword wielding "demon-children" with turbulent childhoods on a quest to become stronger. Why? It first starts off as them simply wanting to become the strongest and die on the battlefield, but soon enough they find something they love and want to protect, while simultaneously they despise it for standing in the way of their primary goals.
