If you've watched just episode 1 of this anime, you already know that you can't possibly give it a 10. In fact, you can't even give it something above a 5. To put it lightly, this anime is hot garbage. The two main issues of this show is its pacing and it's insane levels of cliche.
The main idea behind the overall story, is interesting. In a world of magic, someone is born without it. It's a spin on the age old premise of outcast or lowly being turns hero. But it does add in an interesting plot aid in terms of a non one-sided rival.
...
And the concept that the show would be about the main character's constant struggle without any powers in a world of magic, would have been excellent. That, however, doesn't happen.
This show struggles incredibly with pacing. The first episode is an intro to world and its characters, but is going at mach 10.

I say, mach 10 because in just 1 short episode we are introduced to the world, main characters, the premise that our hero has no powers, his rival has powers and is talented, his rival is chosen as "the one", and he isn't, but his rival is in danger so he tries to save him, not he's in danger, power up power up power up he is "another chosen one".... And with that, the show is dead before it really began. The main character doesn't have magic, but he has "powers". This puts him on equal grounds with everyone, and he no longer really the underdog even if the show wants to make him out to be that.
When I mentioned cliche earlier, I'm not talking about one or two points that make this show very cheesy and cliched. This show took a dump truck full of cliche and keeps dumping them in. You've the supposedly underdog hero, everyone keeps powering up against baddies, tsundere, cool guy, serious guy who is actually a nice guy, an ikemen, power up power up power up, screaming that you won't "give up" and you have "nakama".... This anime tries too hard to be shonen.
The only reason this is not a 1 is that the animation is pretty good and there's some entertainment value in the combat scenes as long as there's no "powering up" and shouting about never giving up.

Baccano sadly falls into the category of "over-hyped mediocrity".
There is no real substance for the viewer to grasp onto besides "oh the style is pretty" and this is kind of "mysteriously cool".
After watching it several times, I fail to remember much, if anything memorable about this show. The show arranges itself in a convoluted, albeit interesting way. Many individuals with separate stories and backgrounds are brought together by mysterious circumstances on a train to nowhere (ok, it is going somewhere).
That being said, that's about where the "interesting" part of the mess of a story ends. It seems like the author had some great ideas

for small short stories. Not having enough material to create stories of their own, they were thrown together with the weak premise of "oh these people got on a train together and mysterious stuff is happening".
If I really wanted to watch something enjoyable with a train in it, I'd watch Thomas the Tank Engine.

The usual complaints I see are that characters have a lack of "emotion" and 'reaction". Subtle facial features and pent up emotions do not mean there is a lack of emotion.
In real life, when someone is happy they do not jump around in joy and their faces do not suddenly get larger with a gigantic smile. These are over exaggerated emotions. When someone is angry or upset, not all people just collapse in tears or pop blood vessels. Most pent this emotion up and most people do not notice it unless they are looking very closely.

This manga is fantastic, placing the characters in a hopeless and desperate situations. It forces the raw emotions out of each character and the reader themselves.
If you are into deep stories that challenge the fundamental nature of life and humans, please read this. Do not read this if you are looking for a funny or happy go lucky story. You will not find it here.

Imagine a small restaurant that sells one specialty food. This restaurant gets a following and it has something good going. Then with the pressure of having to serve more dishes, it turns to something it shouldn't have. It decided to offer foods not remotely related to their specialty food. It began to sell burgers, pasta, sushi, and curry. It became such a jumbled mess that the original specialty food was lost. Though it retained its popularity, it was no longer for the original reason. This, is how I see Code Geass.
Code Geass started with a plot that centered around the character Lelouch and his desire

for revenge against his corrupt father. With his mastery in strategy, he leads the rebels against government forces with the use of large machines. This, is a promising start.
However, as the plot progresses, you can see that the story was not carefully crafted beforehand. It seems as though as time passes, new ideas are thrown into the mix and we are taken further and further away from the core of the story. And as the story becomes unnecessarily complex (Using simple ideas and forcibly mutating them to seem complex), they struggle to explain or conclude each part.
To not spoil the show, the end is basically "things look like they went wrong, but it was my plan all along!" This is so cliche and the easy way out in trying to make an ending for the out-of-control story that they no longer had any idea what they were doing with. (see spoiler review below)
Code Geass is good for some amusement, but don't expect a master piece.

I'm going to go back to discuss the ending. Throughout the show, we slowly start to see Lelouch's descent into power madness and corruption. These are the same traits we know his father to have. We see him struggle with the idea that he is becoming like his father...and then we're told at the end that it was all a plot and he did it on purpose... It just cheapens the whole inner struggle. I just find this to be silly.

Sword Art Online's premise is a fascinating one. It promises for a great story, but ultimately fails due to typical failures faced by many animes.
The show centralizes on the story of people trapped in a virtual reality game. The seemingly innocent and fun game has suddenly become a nightmare; everyone must fight to survive.
Now, to this point the show seems extremely promising. It is a plot which forces the characters to experience what human nature truly is. Are humans innately good? Are they all selfish? What does it truly mean to be human?

I have given this show a bad rating and call it a failure. I will divide my critics into these sections: character, romance, unnecessary plot/items, typical hero, endings, and incest.
Character: At the beginning, character development is extremely key. We're introduced to many people, including the main character, but we still don't know them. This allows for suspense as the viewer does not know how people will act in certain situations. I consider this a good thing, it keeps us on our toes and makes everything unexpected. However, after a point, SAO completely abandons this and becomes "here's a character, now you know everything about them." Characters do not develop as everything has been presented to us.
Romance: There is a point in the show where romance takes over the story completely. I am unsure what the decision behind this was, but it was extremely forced. The reality of death is forgotten and the original story crumbles. I think this was fan service and fan service always kills things.
Unnecessary plot/items: A character is introduced that is a child. Clearly, she is added to the story for the "cute/loli" aspect, hoping to attract those people who are very much into that. This character serves no purpose and is rammed into the story line, ultimately serving no real important value. (I can not delve deeper or reveal the name as they would be spoilers).
Typical Hero: At the beginning, our main protagonist is very human. He makes mistakes, he has doubts, he shows all the things you'd expect from a human being. That is, until a few episodes in. Suddenly, he's the best swordsman around. And if there are unwinnable situations, he keeps going or powers up...or whatever cliche hero thing you can think of. Suddenly, he becomes every hero in every anime.
Ending: SAO has a point that it should have ended. It was already falling apart, but clearly fame and fortune was dragging it on. We go through another arc of "online gaming", but this time there is no grittiness that came with the base SAO. It's truly just became another bargain bin anime at this point.
Incest: There is a point in this series that introduces the idea of incest and brother/sister love. I can not see how this aids in the plot or is important. This, to me, seems as though it was placed to entertain some of the more perverted people in the fan base.
SAO seems to have run out of ideas and struggled to keep itself going. As the story faded, they tried to reach out to a wider audience by forcibly adding irrelevant content.
I would not recommend this series to anyone.

It is on extremely rare cases in which I am able to give a rating of 10 to any piece of work. However, Mushishi deserves a perfect mark as it is a true master piece.
Mushishi seeks to create a world full of wonderment. It draws the viewer in with beautiful visuals as well as beautiful sounds. The soundtrack is truly a marvel and everyone should own each and every song from the show.

definitely enlighten you with the new possibilities of anime and set the bar much higher for any anime you should watch in the future.
It is truly upsetting that there was not more. The series never received the following it deserved, as anime fans tend to flock to cheesy, loli, or purely action based series (the type of anime that Miyazaki despises).

I understand that Death Note has a very large following.
People enjoy its dark and complex story line. The concept of the death note, in which people die if their names are written in it, is quite interesting. This simple concept is the fuel for a greater story that is this show.
Unfortunately, the show crashes really hard at a certain point.
It reaches a really high point and you expect some great weaving of plots and actions taken by characters. The story then spirals down and down as the author struggled to figure out where the story is being taken. Very expected outcomes occur or certain

impossible or confusing situations occur that are clearly thrown in to fill up holes in the plot or as explanations to things.
It's not a bad show, but it's really not as great as people make it out to be.

Plainly put, this is garbage.
This is the type of story writing and story telling that is killing the writing industry.
It's a story disguised as a complex one, but at the core, it is simple beyond belief.
The twists and turns of the plot are simply there to briefly trick you even though you've already known the outcome of a certain event.
All its "complexity" just seems like the author getting new ideas and then cramming that idea into the story, realizing it doesn't end in a favorable outcome, and then finding ridiculous ways to explain why the favorable outcome was achieved.
This is just over-hyped beyond belief.

I never imagined my review would get top.
I've had countless angry fans raid my inbox and comments. Most want to just berate me, but some do want more information. For those few people, I will add some more:
The interaction and dialogue between characters seems off. To me, they do not communicate like a normal person. I know they are meant to be odd people, but the writing made it difficult to understand or even become interested in what they had to say. The best way I could describe it is if aliens came to Earth and only studied humans via anime. And then they tried to write a story based around two awkward anime characters, that's what this felt like.
Some people have pointed out that it is due to bad translation. My first language is Japanese, I read all Japanese literature untranslated.
As stated before, the "complexity" is just a mess. The many "rules" of the world are not defined, but this seems to be very intentional, but not to provide "mystery" or "twists". It seems as though the author made it so they can add or modify rules for their needs. The "twists" only seek to surprise us without adding any value to the plot. Situations in the novel change, drastically at times, for no apparent reason but only to meet the author's objective. This is a classic blunder by bad writers. They have a beginning and an end, but they don't know how to write the middle to tie the two. "the man fell off the cliff...but didn't die because a dragon saved him! and the dragon never comes back into the story"

The art style is nothing special, in fact, I would place the level of drawing not very high. However, do not have this dissuade you from reading this series.
The series starts as a very simple and joke like comic. It may seem juvenile, or even boring. Yet, this is just a ploy by the author to hide the true story behind the characters.
I would call this series a very light thriller. There are instances where the reader may be at the edge of their seats eager to find out more.
However, it is no "Monster" or "20th Century Boy", which has a complex web of stories,

twists and turns, and a high points that are beyond a reader's imagination.
It's surprising that not many people know of this comic series. It is very enjoyable.
