The evil Persona corporation dominates most of the earth with their iron fist, excepting small resistance movements, one of which is located in the free town of Kabuki-cho, also known as “The Dark Side of Tokyo”. Here a group of juvenile delinquents known as Messiah dwell. For a fee, they shelter and assist a terrorist who opposes Persona.
I really wanted to like this movie because it was based on a manga by Hideyuki Kikucho who also wrote Vampire Hunter D. You can see the similarities in the animation (which is superb for its time,) supernatural themes and mysterious, romanticized character of

Darkside. Unfortunately, the movie did not live up to the D.
Call me dense, but I never did understand Darkside's power or why he was at odds with the Persona corporation. Had he not been a part of the movie, the story would have been complete--an oppressed society rising up against its oppressor. In fact, the most explored characters are the terrorist and the Kabuki-cho resident that nurses and shelters him.
Where the anime does excel is the music. In the opening sequence, a street musician breaks out in a blues number during a struggle against Persona. The blues music portrays the heavy air of oppression in Kabuki-cho.
There is thought provoking dialogue regarding peace and whether peace achieved through force is actually peace. Had the movie followed these themes without the supernatural element, it would have been a success.

Appleseed explores humanity's future, who should decide that fate and the consequences of technology in a Utopia populated by humans and bioroids, artificial humans with suppressed emotions and reproduction.
During a spectacular opening battle, the heroine, Deunan, is captured and taken to this Utopia. While this was a really exciting way to captivate the viewer, the battle had absolutely nothing to do with the movie except concrete the idea that Deunan is a superior soldier. Enter her previous partner and lover, Briareos, now in cyborg form. The movie could have explored their back story or the struggle with their current emotions, but they were left

largely undeveloped. All characters were introduced but never really given life, which is a shame because they had great potential.
The story line was predictable due largely to obvious foreshadowing. The viewer is always aware that the villain in the forefront is being manipulated behind the scenes. The dialogue tried to express the characters' grand moral resolve, but mostly came off as cheesy.
The movie has beautiful choreographed battles, an adept female lead, trendy soundtrack and well executed CGI animation. Appleseed fits the bill if you are looking for a visually stunning, mindless sci-fi action flick. If you are looking for depth, you should probably look elsewhere.

When people say anime is for kids, I'd like them to watch "Dead Leaves." With enough coarse language, phallic symbols and defecation jokes to make a sailor blush, Dead Leaves proves animation can cater to an adult audience.
The story follows two unusual characters who wake up naked with no memories. Following their instincts they go on a crime spree, winding up in lunar prison. They seem to have vague recollections of the prison and unusual skill sets with weapons. They uncover top-secret cloning facility, occupied by villainous guards, deformed genetic experiments and shadows of their past.
The animation is beyond bizarre. In mind mind,
...
it resembles the lines and color of graffiti art. Retro, the male protagonist has a tv for a head--the female, Pandy, a large red patch over her eye. There is also Drill Dick (whose design is self explanatory.) The action is marked by comicbook-esque "Pow" and "Bang" exclamations as well as ! and ? The inventive animation is just as entertaining as the dialogue.
The characters, although suffering from amnesia, have great chemistry. Even without a backstory they are unique, gritty and in your face.
If you enjoy adult humor, you can't go wrong with this piece. The blood and bullets flow freely as well as the naughty jokes and sight gags.
